“Zimbabwe must respect fundamental freedoms in run-up to constitutional referendum,” warn UN rights experts

GENEVA (27 February 2013) – Three United Nations Special Rapporteurs urged today the Government of Zimbabwe to respect international human rights norms and standards pertaining to freedoms of association, of peaceful assembly and of expression in the run up to the constitutional referendum on 16 March and subsequent elections which may take place next July.

"Each hour is critical," warns UN Special Rapporteur on Torture after being denied entry to Zimbabwe

JOHANNESBURG (29 October 2009) - The UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Manfred Nowak, remains very concerned about serious and credible allegations of torture, ill-treatment and inhuman prison conditions in Zimbabwe, twenty-four hours after being denied access to the country, contrary to its invitation of 1 October.

Government of Zimbabwe withdraws invitation to UN Rapporteur on Torture at the last minute

GENEVA (28 October 2009) -As previously announced, the Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, Manfred Nowak, was invited by the Government of Zimbabwe to conduct an official fact-finding mission, from 28 October to 4 November 2009.

Zimbabwe: First visit by a UN Rapporteur scheduled for end October

GENEVA (16 October 2009) -The UN Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, Manfred Nowak, has been invited by the Government of Zimbabwe to visit the country from 28 October to 4 November 2009. It is the first time ever that the Zimbabwean authorities have extended such an invitation to a Human Rights Council independent expert.

"This mission is a positive sign of the Government of Zimbabwe's willingness to engage with the UN Human Rights System and permit open and unfettered access to places of detention," Nowak said.
