UN rights expert to assess the situation of violence against women

GENEVA (16 May 2013) – United Nations Special Rapporteur Rashida Manjoo will visit Bangladesh from 20 to 29 May 2013 to assess the situation of violence against women its causes and consequences in the country. This is first visit to Bangladesh by an independent expert designated by the UN Human Rights Council to monitor and report on violence against women worldwide.

UN expert to complete follow up on human rights progress and challenges ahead

GENEVA / PHNOM PENH (14 May 2013) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, Surya P. Subedi, will carry out an official visit to the country from 19 to 25 May 2013 to further explore the progress achieved on the implementation of the recommendations made in his previous reports on the judiciary, parliamentary reform, electoral reform and economic land concessions.

Israel: UN expert warns against Israel’s plans for a six-lane settlement highway in East Jerusalem

GENEVA (13 May 2013) – United Nations Special Rapporteur Richard Falk today called for an immediate halt to construction of a settlement highway in Beit Safafa (East Jerusalem), also known as the ‘Begin Highway.’ Mr. Falk urged the Israeli Government, in particular the Ministry of Transport, to order a stop to the construction, which if completed, would cut through the community of Beit Safafa and ruin the livelihoods of the 9,300 Palestinian residents.

Council President appoints Members of Commission of Inquiry on the Democratic People’s Republic in Korea

Geneva, 7 May 2013 -- The President of the Human Rights Council, Ambassador Remigiusz A. Henczel (Poland), announced today the appointment of Michael Donald Kirby of Australia and Sonja Biserko of Serbia who will join Marzuki Darusman, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, to serve as the members of the commission of inquiry to investigate human rights violations in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, mandated by the Council at its last session. Mr. Kirby will serve as Chair of the three-person commission.

“Justice key for reconciliation in Côte d’Ivoire” – UN human rights expert

GENEVA / ABIDJAN (7 May 2013) – “After more than ten years of political crisis, justice is key for the reconciliation process in Côte d’Ivoire,” United Nations Independent Expert Doudou Diène said at the end of his latest visit to the country to follow up in the implementation of his previous recommendations* and those of other UN mechanisms, including the International Commission of Inquiry on Côte d’Ivoire of 2011.

La Oficina en Colombia del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos reitera su preocupación por el asesinato selectivo y continuo de miembros del pueblo Nasa en el Cauca.

Durante el año 2012, la Oficina recibió información sobre 48 (cuarenta y ocho) asesinatos selectivos en contra de miembros del pueblo Nasa en el Cauca. Entre enero y abril de 2013, la Oficina cuenta con información sobre 8 (ocho) homicidios más, e indicios de que 5 (cinco) de esos crímenes habrían sido perpetrados por las FARC-EP.

Rakhine Commission: “Positive starting point but Government must address impunity” – UN expert

GENEVA (1 May 2013) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar, Tomás Ojea Quintana, today welcomed some forward thinking recommendations from the Rakhine Investigation Commission report. However, he expressed concerns over the lack of recommendations to address impunity and ensure investigations into credible allegations of widespread and systematic human rights violations targeting the Muslim community in Rakhine State.

BISHKEK / GENEVA (26 April 2013) – “The full extent of the sale and sexual exploitation of children in the Kyrgyz Republic remains unknown, due to the clandestine and underground nature of the phenomena, the lack of early detection of children victims, and insufficient awareness of child sexual exploitation online,’’ warned United Nations Special Rapporteur Najat Maalla M’jid at the end of her two week visit to the country.

Eritrea / Human rights: UN rights expert to gather first-hand information from Eritrean refugees

GENEVA (25 April 2013) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Eritrea, Sheila B. Keetharuth, will carry out an official visit to Ethiopia and Djibouti from 30 April to 9 May 2013 to collect information directly from Eritrean refugees on the human rights situation in their country.

“Due to lack of access to Eritrea, I will engage with all others concerned by human rights in Eritrea, including those who consider themselves to be victims of alleged human rights violations, human rights defenders and other civil society actors,” Ms. Keetharuth said.

Bahrain / Human rights: Government effectively cancels UN Special Rapporteur on torture’s visit

GENEVA (24 April 2013) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture, Juan E. Méndez, today expressed his deep disappointment with the decision taken by the Government of Bahrain to postpone his visit to the country, which was scheduled to take place from 8 to 15 May 2013.

“This is the second time that my visit has been postponed, at very short notice. It is effectively a cancellation as no alternative dates were proposed nor is there a future road map to discuss,” Mr. Méndez stressed.
