Woman lifts her family out of poverty in the West Bank

International community pledges €3.25 billion to help rebuild Mali

Brussels - International partners today pledged to support Mali’s political transition and development process, at a conference organized jointly by the Governments of Mali and France with the European Union.

Port-au-Prince – The Committee on Aid Efficiency (CAE) – a strategic forum reuniting the Government of Haiti and stakeholders involved in enacting the social and economic development of the country – met for the first time at the international level.

Kabul, Afghanistan — It was four years ago that Captain Zohra Daulatzia joined the Afghan National Police. But the mother of two girls still gets excited about that momentous day in her life when she achieved one of her life’s greatest ambitions.

07 May 2013 Kabul, Afghanistan | Today UNESCO, UNDP, Afghanistan Ministry of Information and Culture and Afghanistan Journalists Federation jointly celebrated the World Press Freedom Day under the global theme “Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media”. In Afghanistan, mullahs use Islam to protect women and their rights

Highlights

  • The project is part of a US $3.1 million UNDP initiative focusing on gender and children’s rights in Afghanistan, done in partnership with the government.

  • The project educates religious and community leaders of women’s rights as set out by Islamic law.

  • Leaders receive training on the consequences of early marriage, forced marriage and gender-based violence and discuss inheritance issues, including a comparison between what Islamic law says about a woman’s right to inheritance and what happens in practice.
