UNFPA, EU launch a series of workshops to improve social services for victims of human trafficking and smuggled migrants in Central Asia

Dushanbe, 28 May 2013 – Improving the quality and accessibility of social services for victims of human trafficking and smuggled migrants is the goal of a workshop, which started in Dushanbe today. The two-day event is organized by UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, with financial support of the European Union.

EU and WHO support of the improvement of pediatric care services

29 March 2013, Dushanbe, Tajikistan – The WHO EURO recommends the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) as a major strategy for child survival, healthy growth and development. The strategy is based on the combined delivery of essential interventions at the community, health facility and health systems levels. IMCI includes elements of prevention as well as curative care and addresses the most common conditions that affect young children.

Statement of the United Nations Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia and the United Nations in Tajikistan on the situation in Khorog, Tajikistan

The United Nations has been monitoring the events unfolding in Khorog since 24 July, when the Government of Tajikistan launched a special operation in Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast. The UN regrets loss of life and expresses its concern about the possible humanitarian impact of the reported operation on the civilian population of Khorog and its surroundings.

Entrepreneurship Development for Women with Disabilities and Living with HIV

9 June 2012, Dushanbe - Committee for Women and Family Affairs under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan held the National Conference on "Entrepreneurship Development for Women with Disabilities and Living with HIV," involving about 70 participants-key partners from ministries, state agencies, UN organizations, international organizations, representatives of the micro-financial institutions,banking sector, and civil society. Representatives from regions – staff of social women and families support services also attended this event.

Earthquake in Rasht valley, Direct Rule Districts Tajikistan Situation report No 4

Situation Overview

A 5.7 Richter scale earthquake occurred on the night of May 13th, 2012 in the Rasht valley, central Tajikistan. The earthquake affected the three districts of Nurabad, Rasht and Tavildara (at least 12 villages), killing 2 and affecting an estimated of 1,591 people. On May 27th, at 21:24 another earthquake of 4 Richter scale occurred, with an epicenter 15 km north‐west from Tavildara district. Fortunately, earthquake did not cause any further causalities or damages to property.

Earthquake in Rasht valley, Direct Rule Districts Tajikistan Situation report No 3

Situation Overview

A 5.7 Richter scale earthquake occurred on the night of May 13th, 2012 in the Rasht valley, central Tajikistan. The earthquake affected the three districts of Nurabad, Rasht and Tavildara (at least 12 villages), killing 2 and affecting an estimated 2,531 people - residents of the 86 destroyed and 276 damaged residential buildings.

Assessments are still underway (due to the isolated and mountainous area of the disaster) by the district-level Commissions on Emergency Situations and the damage information is still subject to change.

Mudflow in Muminabad district, Khatlon region, Tajikistan - Situation report No 1

Situation Overview

Heavy rains from 10th to 11th of May 2012 triggered mudflow in number of villages in Balkhobi and Tutu jamoats of Muminabad district. Several houses including cultivated land and household facilities have been severely damaged. The affected residents were relocated to their neighbors’ and relatives’ houses. The road within the jamoat has been damaged and travel capacity is limited.

Overview of Disasters in Tajikistan, 25 April - 23 May 2012

Mudflows, Avalanches, Floods and Earthquake

Increased and intense precipitations, weather temperature increase in lower elevations of the country at the end of April and throughout May have triggered numerous mudflows, floods and avalanches in different districts of the country. In addition, on May 13, 2012 an earthquake of 5,6 magnitude occurred with the epicenter in Rasht valley. Occurred disasters have caused number of causalities and major damages to private and social infrastructure and livelihoods of the population.

Situation Overview

A 5.7 Richter scale earthquake occurred on the night of May 13th, 2012 in the Rasht valley, central Tajikistan. The earthquake affected three districts of Nurabad, Rasht and Tavildara (at least 12 villages), killing 1 person, destroying at least 85 residential buildings and damaging 245 others.

Rock falls in the night of May 12th blocked access to the affected area until 1500 hrs of May 14th, 2012, making impossible provision of emergency assistance and assessment teams from the centre of the country.

UNFPA profile: Assistance to Tajikistan provided by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

After the collapse of Soviet Union Tajikistan has experienced a rapid growth in population and although the total fertility rate has been reduced substantially over the past 25 years from 5.7 births per woman in 1980, to 4.0 in 2000, it remains well above replacement level. Fertility is higher for rural women (4.1) compared to urban women (3.6). Tajikistan’s maternal mortality ratio is among the highest of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region. According to official data fifteen per cent of women giving birth in Tajikistan do so without a midwife or skilled birth attendant to assist.

Dushanbe, 2 May 2012- UN Women held national consultations on the integration of peace and security principles into the National Action Plan to be based on the findings of the Fergana valley baseline survey report conducted in the frames of the Cross-regional programme “Women connect across conflicts: building accountability for the implementation of the UN SC resolutions 1325, 1820, 1888, 1889," funded by the European Union and implemented in the South Caucasus, Central Asia, and South Asia.

DUSHANBE, October 5, 2011, Asia-Plus /Nargis Hamroboyeva/ -- Mr. Saber Azam, UNHCR Regional Representative/Regional Coordinator for Central Asia arrived in Dushanbe on October 3 on a five-day working visit, marked a new stage of fruitful cooperation with the Government of Tajikistan, UNHCR CO in Tajikistan reports.

Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Hukumat of Rudaki district and Oxfam in the Republic of Tajikistan

On August 9, 2011, Oxfam in the Republic of Tajikistan and Khukumat of the Rudaki district will sign the Memorandum of Understanding under the “Tajikistan Water Supply and Sanitation” (TAJWSS) project. Regional research and practice conference on “The Elimination of Malaria”

5-6 August 2011- in Khujand, Republic of Tajikistan the Ministry of Health of Tajikistan, through the financial support of UNDP HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria Control Programme in Tajikistan and with the cooperation of World Health Organization, conducted a regional research and practice conference on “The Elimination of Malaria”.
