Status of mission agreement for the United Nations integrated mission in Sierra Leone signed in Freetown

Freetown, Sierra Leone, 22 December 2005 - The Status of Mission Agreement (SOMA) for the United Nations Integrated Mission in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL) was today, signed at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Freetown. The Agreement was signed on behalf of the government of Sierra Leone by the Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Momodu Koroma, while the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General for Sierra Leone (DSRSG) and Executive Representative of the Secretary General designate, Mr. J. Victor Angelo, signed on behalf UNIOSIL.

UNAMSIL hands over more equipments to government of Sierra Leone

Last contingent of peacekeepers leave Sierra Leone

Freetown, Sierra Leone, 15 December 2005 --- 290 Pakistani soldiers, representing the last contingent of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) troops, left Freetown today for their home country Pakistan.

The Pakistani contingent who had left the Hastings Transit Camp yesterday amid cheers and expression of appreciation from the locals, left Lungi International Airport aboard Askari Aviation Airline at exactly 09.38 hours to reunite with their families which they left back home.

UN Security Council confirms appointment of Victor Angelo as Head of peace consolidation in Sierra Leone

The United Nations Security Council has approved Secretary-General Kofi Annan's appointment of Victor Angelo as his Executive Representative and Head of Mission for the United Nations Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL). This appointment is the first of its kind and is in line with the spirit of UN reforms.
A native of Portugal, Mr. Angelo has a distinguished career both within the United Nations and in his country. Prior to his present appointment, Mr. Angelo served as the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General for the peacekeeping operation

Sierra Leone: SRSG hands over Mokobo bridge in Moyamba district

Freetown, Sierra Leone, 1 December 2005 -- The Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) for Sierra Leone, Ambassador Daudi Mwakawago, recently handed over the 110 feet Mokobo Bridge constructed by the Pakistan Engineers IV (PAK ENGR) of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) to the people of the southern Moyamba district.

Work on the Mokobo Bridge started in 23 October 2005 and with its completion, the travel distance between those parts of the country to Freetown has now been reduced by 35 kilometers.

Sierra Leone: Mission's hospital gives top medical care

Sierra Leone-30 August 2005, The Jordanian Medical Contingent (JorMed 10) treats many common diseases in Sierra Leone, especially malaria, typhoid fever, chest infection and fracture. Based in Choithram Hospital, JorMed 10 manages a Level II hospital for UNAMSIL and has successfully treated a total of 246 cases since they arrived some three months ago. Despite its withdrawal program which has entered the final stage, UNAMSIL's Level II Hospital at Choithram continues its work of caring for the sick and currently has 52 patients admitted.
