The following press statement was issued today by Security Council President Kodjo Menan ( Togo):

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the deadly attacks that occurred on Saturday, in the Turkish town of Reyhanli, Hatay, which resulted in the deaths of at least 46 people and dozens of injuries. The members of the Security Council expressed their deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the families of the victims of these heinous acts, and to the Government and people of Turkey.

I. Introduction

1 . The present report is submitted pursuant to the request of the Security Council contained in its resolution 2088 (2013). In accordance with the Council’s request, the report provides an update on the situation in the Central African Republic and an assessment of how the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in the Central African Republic (BINUCA) could further implement its priorities in the light of recent developments in the country.

In accordance with rule 39 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure, I invite Ms. Fatou Bensouda, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, to participate in this meeting.

The Security Council will now begin its consideration of the item on its agenda.

L’Envoyée spéciale du Secrétaire général pour la région des Grands Lacs, Mme Mary Robinson, a présenté, ce matin, au Conseil de sécurité, son « Cadre de l’espoir », un document qui définit sa vision et une approche « différente » pour permettre un vrai changement susceptible de mener à la paix, à la sécurité et au progrès économique.

Acting on the recommendations of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the Security Council today decided to establish the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) by 3 June for an initial period of 12 months, providing the United Nations “good offices” functions — and a range of strategic policy advice — in support of the Federal Government’s peace and reconciliation process.
