Situation remains bleak one year on for 140,000 people displaced in Rakhine state by inter-communal violence

(Yangon, 17 June 2013) One year on from inter-communal clashes in Rakhine State, 140,000 people remain displaced, with little hope of their lives returning to normal.

Outbreaks of inter-communal violence in Rakhine State in June and October 2012 caused the death of 167 people, destroyed over 10,000 buildings and led to a loss of livelihoods and infrastructure across the state. The onset of violence triggered a multi-sector humanitarian response, with food, health, sanitation, shelter and other lifesaving relief to people in need.

Humanitarian Coordinator highlights close collaboration during Tropical Storm Mahasen

(Yangon, 20 May 2013) Tropical Storm Mahasen weakened and dissipated on 17 May, with Rakhine State spared any serious impact, according to the latest assessments undertaken by humanitarian agencies. “The Government responded decisively and proactively to the threat of the storm, taking steps to address the needs of the most vulnerable and provide safety for those most at risk, in collaboration with humanitarian agencies,” the Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Ashok Nigam, said. The majority of over 100,000 people that were moved to safer places have returned voluntarily.

Humanitarian Coordinator calls for urgent relocation of communities in path of Cyclone Mahasen

Yangon, 15 May 2013: As the people and Government of Myanmar brace themselves for Cyclone Mahasen, the Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Ashok Nigam, has called for the urgent relocation of everyone who will be affected. “People who will be severely affected by the cyclone need to be urgently supported to move to safer areas,” Mr. Nigam told a press conference organized by the Government in Yangon. “We [the humanitarian community] have been, and will continue, to work in close coordination with the Government both in preparing for the cyclone and in its aftermath,” said Mr. Nigam.

Statement on unrest in Meiktila by Ashok Nigam, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Myanmar

Yangon 21 March 2013 – As the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Myanmar, I am deeply concerned with the violence and loss of lives and property in Meiktila Township, Mandalay Division. Prevention of such incidents must be given top priority.

In addition to ardent efforts by the religious and political leaders and the authorities to calm the situation, I call upon all parties in the unrest in Meiktila to exercise the utmost tolerance and restraint within their communities.

UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator’s recent visit to Rakhine State “Hope must be brought back to these people.” – Ashok Nigam

UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator calls for urgent action to prevent the spread of inter-communal violence in Rakhine State

Yangon, 28 October 2012 – A United Nations team led by the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Ashok Nigam, returned today from a visit to Rakhine State accompanying the Union Minister for Border Affairs, Lt. General Thein Htay. The team went to villages in Myebon, Minbya, Mrauk-U, Ramree and Kyauk Phyu townships. The team saw large scale destruction of houses.

UN calls for calm and for urgent humanitarian assistance amid renewed inter-communal conflict in Myanmar's Rakhine state

Yangon 25 October 2012 - “The UN is gravely concerned about reports of a resurgence of inter-communal conflict in several areas in Rakhine State - which has resulted in deaths and has forced thousands of people, including women and children, to flee their homes,” said UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar, Ashok Nigam.

The UN has received information from various sources that hundreds of houses have been burnt down since 21 October.

Myanmar honours its humanitarian workers on World Humanitarian Day 2012

Yangon 19 August 2012. Today marks World Humanitarian Day. A commemorative event was held in Yangon this morning, with the participation of Government representatives and the humanitarian partners in Myanmar which include the UN, international NGOs, local NGOs and the donor community.

Rakhine Response Plan: July - December 2012

Inter-community conflict in Rakhine State, which started in early June 2012, has resulted in displacement, loss of lives and livelihood. Of the over 100,000 people affected at the beginning of the crisis, many have already returned home, and as of 29 July, official Government statistics indicate that some 64,000 people remain displaced and are accommodated in 61 camps in Sittwe and Maungdaw townships. Population movement continues, and figures are being revised on a weekly basis.

Statement by Mr. Vijay Nambiar, Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on Myanmar UN Visit to Maungdaw , Rakhine State, 13-14 June 2012

Yangon 15 June 2012 - A United Nations team led by Mr. Vijay Nambiar, Special Advisor to the Secretary-General and Mr. Ashok Nigam, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, visited Maungdaw, in Rakhine State on 13-14 June. Mr. Nambiar was in Myanmar for the Peace Donor Support Group meeting. On 8 June, serious disturbances occurred in Rakhine State which led to the Government declaring a state of emergency in the State. The UN also temporarily relocated, on a voluntary basis, some of its staff that were based in Maungdaw, Buthidaung and Sittwe.

Temporary relocation of UN Staff and their families due to serious disturbances in Rakhine State

11, June, 2012 Yangon— Due to serious disturbances in Rakhine State and with the declaration of State of Emergency by the President, including curfew in five townships, the UN has decided to temporarily relocate, on a voluntary basis, non-essential international and national UN and partner I/NGO staff and their families.

The UN Resident/ Humanitarian Coordinator and Designated Official has requested full Government support for the safety and security of all UN and INGO staff and their families in Maungdaw, Buthidaung and Sittwe and for their re-location to Yangon.

UN convoys return after aid distribution in conflict areas in Kachin State

Yangon, 30 March 2012. United Nations convoys carrying emergency relief supplies to internally displaced people (IDPs) in two locations affected by the conflict in Kachin State have now returned to base after distributing these items in the IDP camps. “Reaching all IDPs in Kachin with humanitarian assistance is critically important.

This joint effort has been possible through receiving the cooperation of the Government and the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), as well as our humanitarian partners on the ground,” said Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Ashok Nigam.

UN aid convoy arrives at conflict areas in Kachin State

Yangon, 25 March 2012. A United Nations convoy carrying essential items has reached some of the displaced population in the areas affected by the conflict in the Kachin State .

“Recognizing the critical importance of assisting IDPs (internally displaced persons) in accordance with the humanitarian principles, we hope that this will now lead to a sustained delivery of aid by the UN and its humanitarian partners to the IDPs, " said Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Ashok Nigam.
