This report of the Haiti Humanitarian Assistance Evaluation of the 2010 earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12th was undertaken by Tulane University’s Disaster Resilience Leadership Academy in partnership with the State University of Haiti (UEH) and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

SITUATION

OVERVIEW

• Heavy violence continues to be reported in the Karm al-Zaytoun neighborhood of Homs, the northwestern Idlib province, and the eastern city of Deir al-Zor.

• Syrian forces have placed land mines near the borders with Lebanon and Turkey, resulting in more civilian casualties (HRW 13 MAR 2012).

Tulane University has been awarded a $5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help universities in disaster-prone regions in Africa and Asia establish a network of education and development programs in disaster resilience and leadership.

SITUATION

• The counted death toll is at 461 at the moment (as of 26 OCT 0900 hrs. CET). 1352 people have been injured, and 2262 buildings destroyed. (AFAD)

• AS of 25 OCT there has been 678 aftershocks, one measuring 5.7.

• 13,000 tents have been dispatched through the Turkish Red Crescent point to about 40,000-45,000 homeless people. 3000 units of temporary housing have been planned for creation within a month.

Over the past twelve months, the international community comprised of non-governmental organizations, United Nations, and donor governments have supported the Haitian people and its government by providing humanitarian assistance and development aid to rebuild the country. This extraordinary effort on the part of local and international actors has been immense in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, resulting in lives saved and alleviating the suffering of the affected population. Twenty-one years of war, destruction, and the displacement of over 1.5 million people have turned northern Ugandan into a humanitarian disaster. One of the war's principal perpetrators has been the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). To fill its ranks, the LRA has abducted tens of thousands of civilians, many of whom have been forced to maim and kill their victims. In October 2005, the International Criminal Court (ICC) unsealed arrest warrants against the LRA leader Joseph Kony and four of his top commanders for crimes against humanity and war crimes.(1)
