II. SUMMARY

The Turkish Red Crescent, which conveys the helping hand of our benefactor community to the four corners of the world, started a campaign of humanitarian aid for Africa.

The Turkish Red Crescent, which was appreciated by the international community, as well as the national community, for the international humanitarian aid activities carried out in the recent years, did not remain insensitive to the Africa that suffers from drought and hunger.

I. SUMMARY

Turkish Red Crescent Society continues its aid activities for decades for Palestine, finally launched a humanitarian relief operation towards Gaza Strip as a result of the tension rise between Israel and Palestine at the end of 2008.

The scope of the operations comprises of periodical shipment of relief supplies and various projects of rehabilitation period.

1. GENERAL SITUATION

The Turkish Red Crescent, immediately after having been informed of the disaster, alarmed all its units over the country and established its Crisis Management Desks in the Disaster Management Center (HQ) (Ankara), the Northern Anatolia (Erzurum), the South-eastern Anatolia (Elazığ), the Eastern Anatolia (Muş), the Mediterranean (Adana), and the Eagan (İzmir) Regional Disaster Management Centres and Sivas and Diyarbakir Local Disaster Management Centres.

A. BACKGROUND

Somalia drifted toward its current famine crisis due to the long- standing drought followed by floods of recent years. The latest findings of the UN Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU) and Famine Early Recovery System (FEWS NET) indicate that 4 million people (almost 53% of the overall population of the country) including 3 million living in north is still in living under crisis.

  1. OVERALL SITUATION:

The Turkish Red Crescent, immediately after having been informed of the disaster, alarmed all its units over the country and established its Crisis Management Desks in the Disaster Management Center (HQ) (Ankara), the Northern Anatolia (Erzurum), the South-eastern Anatolia (Elazığ), the Eastern Anatolia (Muş), the Mediterranean (Adana), and the Eagan (İzmir) Regional Disaster Management Centres and Sivas and Diyarbakir Local Disaster Management Centres.

Turkish Red Crescent, which continues humanitarian aid activities towards famine and drought stroke Somalia, also started a long-term project. A Memorandum of Understanding between Turkish Red Crescent and Somalia Red Crescent, regarding a permanent welfare of the region, was signed in Ankara.

Ahmet Lütfi Akar, President of Turkish Red Crescent and Dr. Ahmed M. Hassan, President of Somalia Red Crescent gave messages of friendship and brotherhood between two nations during the signing ceremony. Somalia Red Crescent delegation also attended the meeting of Executive Committee.

UN and UNICEF delegation that visited Erciş district of Van, examined the container city of Turkish Red Crescent, constructed with the campaign of the newspaper of Hürriyet. UN and UNICEF delegation also came together with the earthquake victims living in the container city.

1. Background

As the result of the drought occurred after the floods in previous two years and the famine, Somali has been slided into a severe crisis.

The humanitarian aid works of the Turkish Red Crescent (TRCS), which took action immediately after earthquakes magnitude 7.2 and 5.6 took place in Van, are streaming.

The first TRCS Teams started their works in the earthquake area almost after in 2 hours after the quake. The relief items have been deployed from the logistics centres of the TRCS spread all over Turkey. 121 TRCS staff and dozens of the TRCS Volunteers are working uninterruptedly in the disaster area in order to meet the needs of the victims.

An Earthquake epicentred in Tabanlı Village and measured 7.2 on the Richter scale struck Van Province, at 13:41 on 23 October 2011. The quake and its aftershocks were mostly felt in Hakkari, Bitlis, Ağrı, Iğdır, Erzurum, Muş, Bingöl, Tunceli, Batman, Şırnak, Mardin, Diyarbakır, Siirt and Şanlıurfa provinces which are located in the regions surrounding the epicentre.

B. DISASTER RESPONSE ACTIVITIES:

The Turkish Red Crescent, immediately after having been informed of the disaster, alarmed all its units over the country and established its Crisis Management Desks in the Disaster Management Center (HQ) (Ankara), the Northern Anatolia (Erzurum), the Southeastern Anatolia (Elazığ), the Eastern Anatolia (Muş), and the Mediterranean (Adana) Regional Disaster Management Centers and Sivas and Diyarbakir Local Disaster Management Centers. In the aftermath of the earthquake, 5 staff from Elazığ Regional Disaster.

The Turkish Red Crescent Special Teams comprised of 123 members arrived at disaster zone after the earthquake measured 7.2 on the Richter scale took place in Van Province. The works for pitching tents for the victims whose houses were damaged are going on. Tents and blankets are continuously delivered to the disaster zone by the TRCS. The total number of delivered tents is 12,981 and the total number of delivered blanket is 25,229.

SUMMARY

North Bakool and Lower Shabelle regions in the south of Somali are declared as drought zone by the United Nations on 20 July 2011. According to the latest information, the regions in the north of the country would be also declared as drought zones in the following months, and if it is not intervened, declaration of famine for the northern regions is also most likely.

Half of the population of the country (3.7 million) is affected by the crisis and 2.8 million of the population has been living in the southern regions.
