How water wells defeat hunger in Ethiopia

Report
Trócaire

Blue skies may be top of an Irish person’s wish list for the summer, but in Ethiopia months of dry heat make it difficult for people to grow food to survive.

The changing climate has led to longer dry spells, with rain falling intermittently, if at all.

For people like Philpos Funto (32), blue skies and dry soil can lead to empty plates and hungry stomachs.

“Many people run out of crops and food in March and April and have to wait until the following harvest season which is in September and October,” he says.

Tackling violence against women in Uganda

Report
Trócaire

By Sean Farrell, Trócaire Country Representative in Uganda

For many women in Uganda, violence is not an isolated and horrid act, but a fact of life. A large study conducted throughout the country in 2006 found that up to 70 per cent of Ugandan women over 15 years of age had experienced physical or sexual violence.

Half of these women experienced violence at the hands of their husbands or partners. These shocking statistics are well above the average in Africa and worldwide, making Uganda one of the most dangerous places in the world for women.

Democratic Republic of Congo: call for a genuine peace process

Goma, 14 February 2012 – For years the international community has attempted to help stabilise eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), at the expense of billions of US dollars, yet sustainable peace remains elusive. Elections in November 2011 were widely seen as lacking credibility(1) and provincial and local elections have been delayed indefinitely.

Women challenging oppression in Guatemala

Report
Trócaire

by Lorainne Keane.

My visit to Guatemala with Trócaire was a week of incredibly mixed emotions; delight at seeing how Trócaire’s work is improving lives, and huge sadness at the stories of abuse suffered by women and young girls. This abuse became common during Guatemala’s 36 year war and still occurs today.

Fleeing conflict in northern Mali

Report
Trócaire

By Helen Nic an Rí

Many people will know Mali as an exotic tourist destination, with the annual ‘Festival in the Desert’ attracting music fans from around the world.

Recently, however, the music in northern Mali has fallen silent and tourism has all but disappeared. As various rebel groups have seized control of much of the north of the country, Malians have witnessed the harsh imposition of Sharia law and a strict interpretation of Islam that forbids music and has seen religious shrines in the world-famous Timbuktu desecrated.

Securing the right to education in Pakistan

Report
Trócaire

Malala Yousufzai, the 14-year-old activist recently shot in Pakistan, is recovering from her injuries and reportedly making good progress. Back in Pakistan, however, the struggle for education continues.

Inequality has led to two parallel societies in Pakistan. There is the rich Pakistan – home to 36,000 millionaires – and there is the real Pakistan – home to almost 40 million people living below the poverty line.

For millions of young people in Pakistan, education remains an aspiration.

Small stones building mountains in Zimbabwe

Report
Trócaire

by Brid Dunne, Trócaire Education officer

Upon arriving at Amazon school in the Insiza District, our Zimbabwean colleague, Walter, summed up our overall feeling: “30 years after independence and this is a school”.

Only one classroom had four walls. Friday’s lessons were still on the board as Orpah, the teacher, showed us around.

“This is the kinder garden area for 45 children”, she said, pointing to an open space with no roof.

Grade 3 were learning number sets. I noted how 35 children squeezed into 8 benched desks.

A year after the drought: building a better future for east Africa

Report
Trócaire

Posted by Justin Kilcullen

I will never forget the shocking scenes I witnessed in east Africa last summer. Mothers, fathers and children left facing days on end with no food, weak from hunger and desperate in the knowledge that it would be months before the rains came.

There was a hopelessness in people’s eyes as they stared out at their barren land and empty animal pens. Drought had deprived them of food, of animals, of income. They were left with nothing.

Climate change causing real water shortages

Report
Trócaire

Posted by Eoghan Rice

A short sunny spell in Ireland has already led to calls for people to be careful how much water they use in case of shortages.

Just as the freeze of two winter’s ago led to frozen pipes in many Irish homes, even the possibility of water shortages this summer reminds us of just how dependant we are on functioning taps. Cooking, washing and cleaning all require easy access to water – when that access stops, normal life grinds to a halt very quickly.
