Nearly a third of children in Sudan malnourished - report

June 16, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese health ministry issued a report this week which found that 33% of children in the country are chronically malnourished while one in every twenty children is suffering from acute malnourishment.

The report also showed that there are 78 out of every 1,000 children who perish due to malnutrition adding that the nutrition situation in Sudan is characterized by "acute malnutrition" levels reaching 16.4 % which is above the global ratio of 15%.

US aims to improve access to clean water in South Sudan

March 24, 2013 (LONDON) - The United States said Sunday, the day after World World Day, that it is committed to to increase the number of South Sudanese who have access to clean water and sanitation.

Only 34% of South Sudanese have access to clean water according to statistics from South Sudan’s ministry of water resources and irrigation, leading to various dangerous diseases such as diarrhea that can lead to death, especially among vulnerable groups.

The issue of access to clean water was tragically illustrated by Cholera outbreaks in Juba in 2006 and 2007.

UNHCR to improve situation of Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia

February 1, 2013 (ADDIS ABABA) – The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Friday that they will be working to stabilise the emergency phase of its response to the Sudanese and Somali refugee influxes in Ethiopia this year.

“UNHCR will improve conditions in the camps and will make the transition from emergency responses to more sustainable activities, thereby also reducing costs and encouraging self-reliance” UNHCR representative in Ethiopia, Kisut Gebregzabhir, told Sudan Tribune.

AU and South Sudan sign post-conflict reconstruction agreements

November 14, 2012 (JUBA) - The African Union Liaison Office in South Sudan (AULOSS) and its implementing partners have signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) on post-conflict reconstruction and development in the young nation.

The first agreement, signed on Monday between AULOSS and South Sudan Development Organization (SSDO) on 12 November, reportedly caters to a 2-months project on improving hygiene and environmental sanitation services for the Juba prison.

Unity state citizens face worsening flooding

August 15, 2012 (BENTIU) -Bentiu town, the Unity state capital, is under threat as heavy rains continue to fall, as its citizens flee for higher ground.

On Wednesday night in rains which began at 4.00pm and continued until midnight, more than 500 homes were flooded and thousands of people are now waiting to flee the area.

Residents claim that 600 more homes are currently at risk. Daresalam village is the worst hit area along with Kalibalek, Biemrouk, Dere and Kordapdap.

12 children die of malaria in remote area of Lakes State

June 17, 2012 (RUMBEK) - The member of parliament representing Awerial County at the Lakes State Legislative Assembly representing has reported that 12 children died of Malaria last week in the Bunagok district.

Taban Abel Aguek told Sudan Tribune that three to four children were dying everyday from daily of malaria in places like Bunagok, Jarweng, Pap, Alel and Abuyung. A medical centre run by Italian charity the Comitato di Collaborazione Medica in Bunagok is "almost helpless", the MP said.

Cholera outbreak in Bentiu kills boy, leaves 16 in hospital

June 11, 2012 (JUBA) - A young boy has died and 16 people admitted into hospital in Bentiu hospital, after a suspected Cholera outbreak in Hayingas and Tiedbar villages within Bentiu town and Rubkotna County.

Payuan Puok, a medical doctor at Bentiu Hospital, told Sudan Tribune on Monday, that three days of heavy rain fall had caused the outbreak of the water-borne decease.

Civilians in Darfur remote areas demands water and medicines

May 30, 2012 (KHARTOUM) — Civilians in North Darfur remote area of Forog urged the United Nations on Wednesday to provide them with more humanitarian assistance complaining from shortage of water and medicines.

The civilians made their demands during a visit by a delegation from the joint African Union United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) which provides humanitarian aid to the isolated population in the restive region.

Sudan since July 2009 expelled 13 aid groups providing food, medical services and drilling and managing water wells in arid region of Darfur.

Unity state boreholes drilled by Mercy Corps.

May 25, 2012 (BENTIU) – The international non-governmental organisation, Mercy Corps. (MC) is carrying out borehole construction in Unity state, where, according to the South Sudanese government, 60 percent of the population survive on often untreated river water; leading to the spread of various waterborne diseases.

It is feared that these diseases, including cholera, will become more prevalent with the onset of the imminent rainy season.

Over 80,000 Sudanese refugees camp in Upper Nile state: UNHCR

Juba, 23, 2012 (JUBA) - The numbers of Sudanese refugees crossing the border into South Sudan increased, in the last few days from 1,500 to 10,000, bringing the over 80,000 the total numbers currently in Upper Nile state, the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said.

The refugees, mainly from Blue Nile state reportedly converged near the border looking exhausted from long journeys, having walked for several days after fleeing their villages in the wake of continuing fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N).

UK charity report: humanitarian situation in South Kordofan necessitates aid

February 11, 2011 (LONDON) - The UK-based Sudan Social Development Organisation (SUDO) released a report on Friday detailing the repercussions of last month’s hijacking of Chinese construction workers in South Kordofan state for the civil population.

Rebels fromthe Sudan People Liberation Movement – North (SPLM-N) attacked Al-Abbasiya in South Kordofan and took custody of 29 Chinese workers. All were freed after 11 days in detention.

On February 5th the UN estimated 30,000 people have been displaced from Al-Abbasiya and the surrounding area.

Abyei joint committee appeals for increased humanitarian aid

February 7, 2012 (JUBA) - The Abyei Joint Oversight Committee (AJOC) has called on humanitarian organisations to urgently respond to the deteriorating humanitarian situation among those displaced from the contested area in mid-2011 when north Sudan’s military took control of the area by force.

Around 110,000 people fled the area, which was supposed to have held a referendum to decide its future in January 2011. However, disputes over who would be allowed to vote meant that the plebiscite did not go ahead.

Three Jonglei counties being ignored says MP

February 4, 2012 (JUBA) - Jonglei state must deliver services effectively and equally across the conflict ravaged state, an MP in Jonglei State’s Legislative Assembly told Sudan Tribune.

Tuong Majok Deng MP, who represents Fangak North constituency number three, said that three counties of Jonglei state are being undermined by the state government in the way services are delivered.

He claimed that Fangak North, Pigi and Pachala counties are receiving less development projects than the other eight counties in the 2011 budget.

10 prisoners die in congested detention center in Aweil

December 26, 2011 (JUBA) - At least 10 people, two of whom were women, are reported to have died in a congested detention center in Aweil, the capital of North Bahr el Ghazal State, a senior government official said on Monday.

The official, who wished to remain anonymous, asked the Judiciary to speed up the justice system "and release some of the 314 prisoners to avoid congestion in prison”.

He said the conditions were unhygienic condition and warned that the if the situation got any worse there could be disease outbreak if no immediate action is taken.

China grants South Sudan $31.5 mln for development projects

October 24, 2011 (JUBA) – The Chinese government today extended a grant of 200 million Yuan (about 31.5 million US dollars) to South Sudan for development projects in the newly independent state.

The grant was announced on Monday in Juba after a meeting between the South Sudanese minister of Information and Broadcasting, Barnaba Marial Benjamin and the Chinese Ambassador to Juba, Li Zhiguo.

South Sudan resolves to distribute constituency funding equally

June 14, 2011 (JUBA) – The Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) unanimously voted on Tuesday to share the $44.9 million (102 million Sudanese Pounds - SDG) Constituencies Development Fund (CDF) to all 170 members of parliament ending long debates on which members qualified for the funds.

The SSLA’s Constituencies Fund Committee (CFC), chaired by James Reat Gony (SPLM, Upper Nile state), presented a report recommending that every MP entitled to get funding for their constituency projects funding from CDF.
