W. Bahr el Ghazal calm after doctor dies in hospital shooting

May 14, 2013 (JUBA) - A soldier in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal state opened fire at Wau Teaching Hospital on Monday afternoon, killing a medical practitioner and wounding three others.

Wau’s Municipal Mayor, Michael Gebba, said the attacker was the husband of a woman believed to have died at the hospital after an operation. The man, he revealed, last week opened a case at Wau Police station against the hospital.

The case is still under investigation.

Meningitis outbreak in S. Sudan’s Upper Nile state

April 30, 2013 (JUBA) - The Ministry of Health has declared an outbreak of Meningitis in South Sudan’s Upper Nile, after the disease reportedly killed two people in its Malakal county.

At least 38 suspected cases, the ministry said in a release, have so far been recorded since the first patient was admitted in Malakal teaching hospital on 15 April.

The most affected patient, it added, are between the ages 18-20 years.

S. Sudan says it's winning malaria fight

April 25, 2013 (JUBA/KHARTOUM) – South Sudan joined in global commemorations on Wednesday marking World Malaria Day, with the government saying it was confident of eradicating the killer disease.  Malaria has brought “incredible destruction” to South Sudan, accounting for two in every 10 deaths in the country. It is also the leading cause of illness and death in children under the age of five.

EU pledges 14.5m euros for health services in Sudan

April 22, 2013 (KHARTOUM) - The European Union announced on Monday it will sink more than 14.5 million euros ($18.8 million) into health-related programmes in Sudan in an effort to strengthen the sector.

Ambassador Tomas Ulicny, head of delegation of the European Union to Sudan, made the pledge in a speech at the opening of the global health diplomacy workshop in Khartoum.

UNHCR braces for refugee influx in S. Sudan’s Upper Nile state

April 8, 2013 (KHARTOUM) - UN agencies in South Sudan’s Unity and Upper Nile states are stockpiling supplies of food and relief items, in preparation for a potential fresh influx of refugees from the Sudanese border states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile.

Cosmas Chanda, the representative for the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) in South Sudan, said the flow of new arrivals into Upper Nile state had continued - albeit at a reduced pace in comparison to mid-last year - with the Sudanese refugee population in South Sudan surpassing 190,000.

March 19, 2012 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s Health Ministry, Malaria Consortium and other international partners have signed the Malaria programme review, renewing their commitment to fight the disease.

Considered an in-depth assessment of South Sudan’s current National Malaria Control Programme, the review was conducted to assess goals, strategies and interventions needed to strengthen planning and resource mobilization to scale up malaria prevention and control in the young nation.

South Sudan and partners sign agreement to fight Malaria

March 13, 2013 (JUBA) - South Sudan and several international partners have signed an agreement which recommits them to the fight and control of malaria in the new country by 2018.

The five-year program, spearheaded by the ministry of health, has also reviewed the policies and programming framework within the context of the health system and the national development agenda in the country.

February 26, 2013 (JUBA) – An internal report obtained by Sudan Tribune has found that the majority of health facilities in South Sudan lack essential medicines.

The report, which looked at the distribution of medicines and medical supplies, discovered expired medicines at Juba’s central medical warehouse and state pharmacies worth over SSP 8 million.

Living with the curse of leprosy in South Sudan

February 11, 2013 (BOR/JUBA) – In a green valley beside the River Nile lies a village dotted with grass-thatched huts where an isolated 140 people call home. Children play outside and others pump water from the borehole, as elderly women loiter around the compound half naked.

Located in Malek, about 20km south of Bor, the capital of South Sudan’s Jonglei state, the village was established in the 1930s to house people suffering from leprosy, according to local elders.

New maternity ward opens in Bor

February 6, 2013 (BOR) - South Sudan, which has the worst maternal mortality rate in the world, opened a new a new maternity ward in Bor, the capital of the young nation’s largest state on Wednesday.

The minister of health, Michael Milly Hussein, officially opened the new facility, promising that 12 new health facilities would be built in Jonglei state as part of a plan to build 100 new health centres across South Sudan, but he did not give locations or a timeframe.

Food safety remains a concern in South Sudan

January 26, 2013 (JUBA) – South Sudan is still faced with challenges of assuring food and drug quality control as the 18-month old country has not yet established facilities to certify the quality of consumable goods.

Tons of expired food commodities or with less quality ingredients as well as fake human and animal drugs are believed to have been finding their ways into the country every year without being detected by the authorities.

UNAMID confirms death and displacement in Darfur tribal fighting

January 10, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – The African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) issued a statement today confirming the eruption of tribal clashes in the restive region leading to an "undetermined" number of casualties and displacement of thousands of civilians.

The heavy fighting that broke out last week between Rezeigat Aballa and Bani Hussein tribes was caused by a dispute over exploration in a gold mine in Jebel Amer area in North Darfur state.

Jonglei governor calls for humanitarian assistance for flood victims

December 16, 2012 (BOR) - The governor of Jonglei state, Kuol Manyang, has called upon humanitarians agencies to assist Ayod and Duk counties which have been hit by food shortages following the late start of the rainy season in May and heavy flooding in August and September.

“The challenge in Ayod and Duk counties is hunger because of the floods in the state this year. In Ayod people survived on water lilies, wild fruits and leaves,” said Manyang.

Flood victims in Unity state face health problems

November 29, 2012 (BENTIU) - The health situation among children and pregnant women in Unity State’s Payinjiar County is deteriorating due to widespread flooding, say government officials.

Payinjiar County’s Executive Director, Cornelio Waya Ruach, told Sudan Tribune on Thursday that the “situation is out of hand" and "there is need for quick help of people on ground as the death rate among pregnant women and children are on rise every day as there is no medicine".

AU and South Sudan sign post-conflict reconstruction agreements

November 14, 2012 (JUBA) - The African Union Liaison Office in South Sudan (AULOSS) and its implementing partners have signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) on post-conflict reconstruction and development in the young nation.

The first agreement, signed on Monday between AULOSS and South Sudan Development Organization (SSDO) on 12 November, reportedly caters to a 2-months project on improving hygiene and environmental sanitation services for the Juba prison.

100 students join South Sudan Red Cross in Bor

Nearly 100 students from Alliance High School have voluntarily joined South Sudan Red Cross society in Bor, the capital of Jonglei State, according to the director of Red Cross Society in Bor, David Gai.

According to Gai, the new volunteers will undergo training to understand the principles of neutrality and impartiality, which are integral to the Red Cross, before they participate in any area of disaster management.

“After we recruit they will be able to serve their communities through the knowledge they gain from us”, he said.

Kala-azar outbreak kills 10 people in Jonglei

October 12, 2012 (JUBA) - At least ten people have died and 42 others admitted in to hospital following the recent outbreak of Kala-azar in Ayod County in South Sudan’s Jonglei State, local leaders say.

Seven people died in Pagil Payam [district] while three died in Jech Boma [sub-district], according to Nelson Kuach Thoat, a member of Jonglei State Legislative Assembly representing Ayod.

Jonglei’s flood victims receive aid

October 10,2012 (BOR) – South Sudan Red Cross (SSRC) distributed mosquito nets, blankets and other aid items to flood victims in Bor, Jonglei state, on Tuesday.

The Jonglei state director of SSRC, David Gai Deer, said that the distribution was a joint initiative including other humanitarian agencies. It targeted 1,500 vulnerable people.

Jonglei’s capital, Bor, and surrounding areas are flooded, following heavy rains that began at the beginning of August.
