EU pledges 14.5m euros for health services in Sudan

April 22, 2013 (KHARTOUM) - The European Union announced on Monday it will sink more than 14.5 million euros ($18.8 million) into health-related programmes in Sudan in an effort to strengthen the sector.

Ambassador Tomas Ulicny, head of delegation of the European Union to Sudan, made the pledge in a speech at the opening of the global health diplomacy workshop in Khartoum.

Japan funds major upgrade to Al-Jazeerah girls’ school

March 21, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – The recent handover ceremony of Al-Jazeerah state’s Al-Komor Village Girls’ Primary School, which has undergone a series of extensive refurbishments, was attended by a number of foreign and Sudanese dignitaries.

The project was funded by the Japanese government through its grant assistance scheme for grassroots and human security projects (GGP).

Japan donates $38m to enhance Sudan peace efforts

March 7, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – Nearly $38m has been earmarked by the Japanese government to help the United Nations and other international organisations in efforts to consolidate peace in Sudan.

The contribution, the Japanese embassy said in a statement, comes from its supplementary budget for the 2012 financial year, and is expected to be used to respond to the emergency appeals especially in the conflict-affected areas of Sudan.

UK funds project to boost economic diversification

February 4, 2013 (JUBA) – The Republic of South Sudan has launched a customs development and trade facilitation programme at its Nimule border, seeking to help the country diversify its economy, currently dependent oil, to non-oil resources.

TradeMark East Africa (TMEA) is implementing the project, under the country’s chamber of commerce, trade and industry, with funds from the UK government.

A significant rise in custom revenue, officials say, has been realised since work to develop South Sudan’s customs service started in 2011.

November 14, 2012 (KAMPALA) – The “Educate A Child” initiative was launched by Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the second of the three wives of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar and the UN children’s fund (UNICEF) on Wednesday.

They signed a three-year agreement aimed at working towards the goal of quality primary education for all the world’s children.

EU donates books to S. Sudan Human Rights Commission

June 24, 2012 (JUBA) - The European Union (EU) on Friday announced the donation of over 80 specialist books, covering a wide range of human rights issues, to South Sudan Human Rights Commission (SSHRC).

The books, the EU said in statement, are expected to support the human rights body in its activities, including enhancing their staff with knowledge and skills on human rights issues, which they can use to train government institutions and the public.

May 22, 2012 (JUBA) — The US government has announced $30m cash donation directed towards the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) emergency relief operation, specifically targeting conflict-affected and food-insecure people in South Sudan.

The donation, to be delivered through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is reportedly in response to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the world’s newest nation, where an estimated one million people are severely food-insecure due to a cereal deficit, high food prices and inter-communal conflict.

Lily Asuya Kwaje, a South Sudanese returnee can hardly hide her smile. She is among the 300 beneficiaries of a one-day seed exhibition organized by United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in Morobo county, Central Equatoria state.

Having spent 11 years in Uganda as a refugee, the 48-year old Kwaje, who lost her husband during the civil war, returned to South Sudan only two years ago to begin a new life.

November 11, 2011 (JUBA) - The European Union (EU) Commission has pledged €200m to the Republic of South Sudan (RSS), as part of their commitment to strengthen development support in Africa’s newest nation, Andris Piebalgs, the EU commissioner for development said Friday.

The funds, Piebalgs added, will mainly address key sectors like health, education, rule of law and infrastructural development, focusing on feeder roads construction.

October 24, 2011 (JUBA) – The Chinese government today extended a grant of 200 million Yuan (about 31.5 million US dollars) to South Sudan for development projects in the newly independent state.

The grant was announced on Monday in Juba after a meeting between the South Sudanese minister of Information and Broadcasting, Barnaba Marial Benjamin and the Chinese Ambassador to Juba, Li Zhiguo.

Uganda to create jobs for teachers in South Sudan

October 19, 2011 (KAMPALA) – Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni says his country will send teachers to South Sudan as an effort to help the new nation build its human capacity and recover from decades of conflict that have badly affected literacy and the education system.

Speaking at the opening of a leaders retreat for his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) on Monday in the town of Kyanykwanzi, president Museveni said this will aid job creation for his citizens.

Bill Gates Foundation donates $5m for South Sudan capital

April 27, 2011 (JUBA) - The US-based Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has earmarked five million dollars for the development of South Sudan’s regional capital, Juba, its mayor has revealed.

The donation, according to the mayor Mohamed Alhaj Baballa, will mainly be used to boost areas like security, rule of law and the environment. Juba County currently consists of 16 payams (districts).

March 10, 2011 (Yambio) - United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has donated US$300,000 for the training of Western Equatoria state (WES) tax collectors, bolstering the state's efforts to foster development.

WES, a poor and isolated state near the borders of Central African Republic (CAR) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has a history of conflict due to the six-year tyranny of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) is dependent on block grants from Juba.

Local revenue projected for 2011 is SDG8 million (US$3 million), greater than the 2010 projection of SDG2.5 million

Sudan: Rotary club donates medical equipments to Juba hospital

March 08, 2011 (JUBA) - The Rotary Club of Juba last week donated an anaesthetic system to the government-owned Juba teaching hospital, as part of its corporate social responsibility.

The state-of-the-art Glostavent machine, valued at US$15,000, is specifically designed for use in tough environments. Manufactured by the UK-based Diametica Limited, the machine is expected to enhance the capacity of the hospital to conduct safe operations, particularly in complications in connection with child birth.

November 10, 2010 (JUBA) - United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has handed over 20 hard top Land Cruiser vehicles, to the Southern Sudan Refeferendum Bureau (SSRB).

South Sudan: WFP donates €1.2m for food assistance in schools

September 29, 2010 (JUBA) - The UN World Food Programme (WFP) yesterday received a €1.2million contribution from Italian Development Cooperation earmarked to provide urgently needed food assistance for 76,000 school children in Lakes and Eastern Equatoria states of Southern Sudan.

WFP, the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, reportedly feeds on more than 90 million people, each year , in more than 70 countries. This year alone, the organization's emergency operation in Sudan reportedly requires US$864 million and is about 80 percent funded.
