FAO expands support for national food security information systems for decision makers

23 killed in tribal clashes in South Darfur

May 22, 2013 (KHARTOUM) - At least 23 people were killed and 51 others injured yesterday in tribal clashes between Al- Gimir and Bani Halba tribes in Sudan’s South Darfur state.

The confrontations between the two tribes also led to burning of Katela town and fleeing of its 20,000 residents to the southern neighbouring locality of Tulus.

Fires and columns of smoke were seen in provinces more than 50 kilometres away.

A spokesperson for Al-Gimir tribe, Abakar Al-Tom, lashed at the government of South Darfur state, accusing it of colluding with the Bani Halba tribe.

W. Bahr el Ghazal calm after doctor dies in hospital shooting

May 14, 2013 (JUBA) - A soldier in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal state opened fire at Wau Teaching Hospital on Monday afternoon, killing a medical practitioner and wounding three others.

Wau’s Municipal Mayor, Michael Gebba, said the attacker was the husband of a woman believed to have died at the hospital after an operation. The man, he revealed, last week opened a case at Wau Police station against the hospital.

The case is still under investigation.

Police officer kills 14 civilians

May 14, 2013 (ADDIS ABABA) - An Ethiopian federal policeman shot dead 14 innocent people in the northern west city of Bahirdar, a regional police source told Sudan Tribune on Tuesday.

Amhara regional police commissioner, Mulgeta Worku, said the shooter randomly opened fire on Sunday evening at around 9pm local time against residents of Abay Mado vicinity and against passers by.

The dead include children, women and elderly.

Former Darfur rebel leader killed near Sudan-Chad border area

May 12, 2013 (KHARTOUM) - A former Darfur rebel faction has announced the death of its leader Mohamed Bashar and his deputy, Suleiman Arko, saying they were killed during an attack carried out by the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) inside Chad near the Sudanese border.

Bashar, who led a splinter JEM faction, was returning to Darfur from the Chadian capital before heading to Khartoum to start the implementation of a peace deal he signed with the government in Doha on 6 April.

Sudan says deteriorating storage capacity causes grain waste

May 11, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – The Strategic Reserves department at the Agricultural Bank of Sudan (ABS) has acknowledged that the lack of storage capacity in the country has resulted in losing a quarter of grain production in the country.

The department’s director at the ABS Fadul Hassan Mohamed, disclosed that 25% of grain production was damaged due to poor storage.

Mohamed noted the gap between sorghum production which amounted to 4.3 million tons while the storage capacity was a mere 650,000 tons.

South Sudan establishes commission for refugee affairs

May 11, 2013 (JUBA) – The Republic of South Sudan has established a Commission for Refugee Affairs (CRA) as hundreds of thousands of refugees have entered the new republic from the neighbouring countries.

Most of the refugees fled from the neighbouring Republic of Sudan due to the conflicts in Darfur, Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile states.

Others come from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Central African Republic (CAR), Ethiopia and Uganda.

Unity state: Raiders injure policeman, seize over 400 cattle

May 7, 2013 (BENTIU) – A policeman was injured and over 400 cattle sized when armed youth stormed Unity state’s Mayiandit County on Monday, an official said.

The incident, according to the county Commissioner, involved an estimated 200 armed youth suspected to be from neighbouring Warrap state.

“The raiders were armed and had to fight a combined force of the SPLA [South Sudan army] and the area Police. Unfortunately, one policemen was killed while trying to recover the stolen cattle,” said Gideon Gatpan Thoar.

27 children removed from military bases in Unity state

May 6, 2013 (BENTIU) - Unity state authorities have removed 27 children from South Sudan’s national army this week as part of the implementation of a series of agreements inked by military and the United Nations on 20 November 2009.

The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is mandated to facilitate the process in terms of funding South Sudan’s Disarmament Demobilization Reintegration Commission (DDR), which identifies children that may be associated with the armed forces and finds ways to remove and place them back into civilian life.

Meningitis outbreak in S. Sudan’s Upper Nile state

April 30, 2013 (JUBA) - The Ministry of Health has declared an outbreak of Meningitis in South Sudan’s Upper Nile, after the disease reportedly killed two people in its Malakal county.

At least 38 suspected cases, the ministry said in a release, have so far been recorded since the first patient was admitted in Malakal teaching hospital on 15 April.

The most affected patient, it added, are between the ages 18-20 years.

April 25, 2013 (JUBA/KHARTOUM) – South Sudan joined in global commemorations on Wednesday marking World Malaria Day, with the government saying it was confident of eradicating the killer disease.  Malaria has brought “incredible destruction” to South Sudan, accounting for two in every 10 deaths in the country. It is also the leading cause of illness and death in children under the age of five.

SPLM-N proposes talks on framework agreement about inclusive process for Sudan’s constitution

April 24, 2013 (KHARTOUM) - The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) on Wednesday said it is "ready and prepared" to hold direct talks with Khartoum to resolve the humanitarian crisis and reach a framework agreement on an inclusive process on the country’s new constitution.

Negotiating teams from the Sudanese government and the rebel SPLM-N on Tuesday held separate consultations with the African Union mediation to prepare the agenda of the negotiations for a political solution to the conflict in the Blue Nile and South Kordofan states.

South Sudan army contains cattle raiding conflict in Eastern Equatoria

April 23, 2013 (JUBA) - South Sudan’s army has successfully brought a conflict over cattle raiding in Eastern Equatoria State to an end, despite coming under sharp and sustained criticism from residents and local officials from the area over the approach it used to separate the two rival groups, the state government said Tuesday.

At least eight people, including government soldiers were killed when security forces clashed with cattle raiders, sparking a gun battle that threatens to set alight worrying security situation.

April 22, 2013 (KHARTOUM) - The European Union announced on Monday it will sink more than 14.5 million euros ($18.8 million) into health-related programmes in Sudan in an effort to strengthen the sector.

S. Sudan tightens security after deadly road attacks

April 22, 2013(JUBA) – South Sudan security forces have tightened security on roads leading to the capital, Juba, after two separate attacks on civilians and vehicles along its major highways. South Sudan Police on patrol (UN) Police spokesman, James Monday Enoka, said the security committee has imposed tight security measures along the Juba-Nimule and Juba-Torit roads.

Both attacks, he stressed, occurred very close to one another.

Hunger kills 15 in Unity state, local officials say

UNMISS calls for use of force in Bor when threatened

April 13, 2013 (BOR) - The United Nations in South Sudan called on Saturday for the mission’s peacekeepers in Jonglei to use force in self defense when threatened or attacked in their areas of operation.

The announcement comes as senior UN officials visited Jonglei sate, where five UN soldiers and seven other staff were killed in the Gumuruk area, while travelling in a convoy from Bor, the state capital, to Pibor town.
