Only ceasefire can allow return of aid groups to Blue Nile and Kordofan – Sudan’s FM

September 29, 2011 (PARIS) — Foreign minister Ali Karti said yesterday that Sudan can allow aid groups to work in Blue Nile and southern Kordofan only when the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) stops the fighting in the two troubled provinces.

The fight broke out between Sudanese army and rebels of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in the two states bordering the Republic of South Sudan, since June for South Kordofan and Blue Nile in September.

FAO, gov’t conduct livestock vaccination in S. Sudan

September 29, 2011 (TEREKEKA) A team of technical experts from UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and officials from the ministry for animal resources and fisheries on Thursday successfully conducted a one-day livestock vaccination exercise in Terekeka county, Central Equatoria state.

The campaign, which took place at a cattle camp, located about 3KM west of the county headquarters mainly aimed at eradicating the deadly black quarter, hemorrhagic septicemia and East Coast Fever diseases.

South Sudan appeals for international assistance to improve health services

September 24 (JUBA) - The government of newly-independent South Sudan has appealed for international assistance to help address some of the challenges confronting provision of basic health services.

Building a health care system is seen by the United Nations as one of the priorities that the newly independent state should undertake. Health experts consider that South Sudan needs at this stage three basic things: education, better nutrition, and simple drugs. They also call for a special attention to women and children health.

South Sudan to shut borders with the north: official

September 24, 2011 (JUBA) – The Republic of South Sudan (RoSS) will close its borders with its northern neighbor starting next December, an official in Juba said today.

Over 2,000 firearms collected in Lakes state, South Sudan

September 23, 2011 (JUBA) - The Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) division six commander in charge of disarmament in Lakes and Unity states, Marial Chanuong Yol, told press that disarmament is moving ahead peacefully.

Yol said that 2,201 firearms have been collected in Lakes state since the disarmament campaign began on 7 September and the “surrendering of arms is still going on.”

South Sudan plans to disarm 15000 soldiers from security forces

September 24, 2011 (JUBA) — The government of the Republic of South Sudan on Friday unveiled plan targeting 15000 soldiers to be removed from the active military and police services.

UN regional coordinator for South Sudan, David Gressly, estimated in June 2011 that the SPLA had between 150,000 and 200,000 soldiers, and that "probably more" than half should be demobilized after secession.

Nine LRA abductees in W. Equatoria reunited with their parents in Congo

September 21, 2011 (KAMPALA) — Abducted children who were rescued by the Ugandan People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) forces in Western Equatoria state have been reunited with their parents in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

On 20 September 2011, the State Ministry of Social Development in Western Equatoria in collaboration with other partners, returned nine Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) abductees to their families.

Disarmament begins in Unity State, say local authorities

September 22, 2011 (BENTIU) -The Unity state government began a disarmament process on 22 September as part of a policy agreed upon by both state and the central government in Juba.

Gideon Gatpan Thoar, state minister of information and communication says that the exercise shall be peaceful process in which individuals will be able register voluntarily with their local chiefs before the disarmament period.

Chiefs must then register and submit the names of those holding illegal fire arms with the office of the County commissioner.

Sudan vows to continue military campaign in Blue Nile

September 17, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese government on Saturday said it is determined to crush the rebellion in the Blue Nile state, a day after Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi visited Khartoum in a fresh mediation push.

Last month clashes broke out in the state which borders Ethiopia and South Sudan between Khartoum and units from Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA). Both sides traded blame over who started the fighting.

FAO seeks to reduce S. Sudan’s dependency on imported seeds

September 15, 2011 (MOROBO) - The UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) has embarked on a strategy aimed at reducing farmers’ dependency on imported seeds in South Sudan, as part of the new country’s drive to enhance food security among its population.

The one-year community-based seed production project is being implemented in the five South Sudan states of Central Equatoria, Eastern Equatoria, Western Equatoria, Lakes and Western Bahr el Ghazal, courtesy of a €500,000 ($692,900) from the French government.

Sudan army speak about new victories in Blue Nile

September 10, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — A Sudanese official estimated the number of Blue Nile refugees at five thousand while the army said it had broken the siege imposed by rebels on Giessan town near the Ethiopian border.

On 9 September, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) reported that the fight, which started one week ago, between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and rebel group the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) continues to drive civilians out of their homes and into exile in Ethiopia.

South Sudan army embarks on disarmament operation in Lakes state

September 10, 2011 (JUBA) - The Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), which became the official army of the newly established Republic of South Sudan in July, said on Saturday it has begun disarming civilians in Lakes state.

The spokesman of the army said South Sudan’s military is responding to an order by Lakes state governor, Chol Tong Mayay, requesting the SPLA in the area peacefully collect all types of weapons from the civilian population.

Sudan’s SPLM-N vows to buck Blue Nile’s ‘coup’

September 3, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement North (SPLM-N) on Saturday declared resistance to what it described as a coup against the elected governor of the Blue Nile State, Malik Aggar, announcing intensification of its efforts to forge a nationwide alliance to execute regime-change agendas.

Sudan’s southern state of Blue Nile on Thursday became the latest flashpoint, since South Sudan seceded from the rest of Sudan in July, when clashes erupted between Sudan’s army (SAF) and forces of the SPLM-N led by Malik Aggar.

South Sudan calls to contain fighting in Blue Nile

September 2, 2011 (JUBA) — The Government of South Sudan on Friday expressed concern over the increasing military activity in the bordering states of North Sudan and called on Khartoum to contain the fighting which began in Blue Nile state on Friday.

This call comes following reports about heavy fighting in involving the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) today. The Sudanese army and the SPLM troops traded accusations of starting the hostilities in a region where tensions between the two sides were increasing since the start of clashes in Southern Kordofan.

Sudan’s president declares emergency in Blue Nile, sacks governor

September 2, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir has declared a state of emergency in the Blue Nile State and dismissed its governor Malik Agar amid reports of aerial bombardments and concomitant displacement in the unrest-hit region.

Al-Bashir further decreed the appointment of the commander of Sudan’s army (SAF) base in the Blue Nile’s capital al-Damazin, Major General Yahya Mohamed Khair, as a military ruler of the state.
