USAID, Malaria consortium launches mass drug treatment in S. Sudan

June 29, 2011 (JUBA) - United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has officially launched a program of mass drug treatment for bilharzia and intestinal worm infections in Yei County, Central Equatoria state (CES).

The two-day campaign, involving the distribution of Praziquantel and Albendazole for bilharzia and intestinal worms respectively also targeted neighbouring countries like Lainya, Morobo and Kajo-Keji.

Juba: Security operation recovers over 700 weapons

June 27, 2011 (JUBA) - An impromptu operation conducted by South Sudan’s Security Committee; a body recently established to oversee the pre-independence security preparations, saw over 780 assorted weapons recovered on Saturday said South Sudan’s Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The operation, which began in the early hours of Saturday morning, continued until mid-day, mainly involved the thorough inspection of vehicles and their occupants house-by-house sweeps.

Sudan and LJM rebels agree on the date of Darfur referendum

June 26, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese government and Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) agreed to delay the referendum on Darfur administrative status for one year after the signing of a peace agreement, as others issues remain unresolved.

Since Darfur stakeholders conference the two parties pledged to reach a peace agreement despite the divergences on power sharing and security arrangements they failed to bridge since November 2010.

Over 400 Lakes State ex-combats recieve training in Rumbek

June 26, 2011 (JUBA) – Authorities in Lakes state have graduated 425 ex-combatants who completed either small business or vocational training graduated in Rumbek on Friday. The training was organised by the German International Cooperation Services (GIZ IS), contracted by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Jok Ayom Majak, Lakes State Minister of Rural Development, was the guest of honour at the third graduation ceremony of ex-combatants in Lakes State under the GIZ IS Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration project.

South Kordofan’s IDPs “coerced” to return to unsafe areas

June 25, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – Insecurity in Sudan’s flashpoint state of South Kordofan has persisted amid reports of freshly-laid landmines and attempts by local security authorities to coerce displaced persons to return to places where their safety could be at risk.

Sudan’s north-south border state of South Kordofan has been in a state of civil war since clashes erupted on 5 June between north Sudan army known as the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and local fighters aligned with the soon-to-be independent South Sudan.

Jonglei: Hundreds killed and many cattle raided in Pibor - official

June 24, 2011 (BOR) - Hundreds of people have been killed and a large number of cattle stolen in Pibor county in South Sudan’s largest state of Jonglei following clashes between the Murle and Lou Nuer ethnic groups the county’s commissioner says.

The vast and swampy territory of Jonglei is shared by the several ethnic groups mainly Bor Dinka, the Lou Nuer, and Murle who clashed during the past over cattle , water and pasturage. The long years of war in the south also affected these tribal groups and they supported different parties.

Eritrean opposition asks for international support as volcano kills seven

June 22, 2011 (ADDIS ABABA) – An exiled Eritrean opposition group on Wednesday called on the international community to immediately act to provide urgent assistance to the thousands of Eritreans it said are affected by the Narbo volcano that erupted over a week ago in the country’s south.

The Addis Ababa-based Red Sea Afar Democratic Organization (RSADO) said the volcanic eruption has killed at least seven people, injured many others and displaced thousands of people.

Eight killed in another revenge attack in Lakes State

June 21, 2011 (JUBA) - Eight people died and a further eight were injured when Rumbek Central County in Lakes State was attacked in the early hours of Monday the local commissioner has said.

Commisioner Matur Majok Magol, said that his county came under surprise attack by pastoralists youth loyal to neighbouring Cueibet County. The attack is the latest revenge attack to hit Lakes State, which is blighted by retributive attacks related to cattle raiding and robbery between rival groups.

Jonglei state: Landmines threaten resettlement in Fangak

June 21, 2011 (BOR) – James Maluit Ruach, Commissioner of Fangak County in Jonglei State, says landmines allegedly planted by renegade Gen. George Athor are impeding resettlement of displaced persons.

Speaking to reporters in Bor on Monday, the commissioner expressed concern over lack of farming activities in the county and called on all stakeholders to respond swiftly.

Over 2,000 displaced by North Sudan’s bombing of Unity State - officials

June 17, 2011 (BENTIU) - The bombardment of northern Unity State in South Sudan by North Sudan’s military has displaced over 2,000 civilians according to local officials just three weeks before the South separates from the North.

Around 152 of those displaced from Jaw district on the ill-defined North-South border, had recently been forced to leave their homes in the Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan due to fighting between the northern army and armed groups who were aligned to South Sudan during the civil war.

June 13, 2011 (RUMBEK) - Over 400 street children in Rumbek need to be reunited with their families, Lakes state’s minister for gender and social welfare, Arkanjelo Deng Kuok, said on Thursday June 9.

Speaking in his office in Rumbek the minister said that allowing the children to remain on the street would result in them falling into a life of crime.

Jonglei: 6 killed, 4 injured and 1 child abducted in Thumaan

June 14, 2011 (BOR) - At least 6 people were reported dead, four children injured and one child abducted on Monday 13 June in a night attack on Thuman village in Mathiang buma [district] in the north of Jonglei states Bor County.

Malueth Bior, whose home was attacked, said he saw five gunmen after he was alerted by his eight guard dogs just after he had returned from seeing his cows a few metres from the residential area.

South Sudan resolves to distribute constituency funding equally

June 14, 2011 (JUBA) – The Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) unanimously voted on Tuesday to share the $44.9 million (102 million Sudanese Pounds - SDG) Constituencies Development Fund (CDF) to all 170 members of parliament ending long debates on which members qualified for the funds.

The SSLA’s Constituencies Fund Committee (CFC), chaired by James Reat Gony (SPLM, Upper Nile state), presented a report recommending that every MP entitled to get funding for their constituency projects funding from CDF.

June 13, 2011 (TURALEI) - Authorities state hosting the majority of the internally displaced persons (IDP) from the conflict-ridden region of Abyei on Monday expressed fears of the spread of contagious diseases.

Clashes between Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) controlled by government in Khartoum and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) component of the Joint Integrated Units (JIU) and local police in the area have displaced what the Government of South Sudan (GoSS) estimates as 150,000 people , creating a dire need for water, sanitation and other essentials.

North Sudan army carries out air attacks in Unity state, South Sudan says

June 9, 2011 (JUBA) – North Sudan army today carried out intensive air attacks in South Sudan’s Unity state, a state minister has told Sudan Tribune.

The attacks, which occurred from 7-8AM in the morning, was reported by the minister of Information in Unity state, Gideon Gatpan Thoar.

Thoar told Sudan Tribune on Thursday that two Antonov’s airplanes belonging to the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), north Sudan army, carried out the dawn attacks in a place called Jau in Pariang County of the state near the North-South borders.

SPLM officials pledge to take Abyei’s war crimes to the ICC

June 9, 2011 (JUBA) —The leadership and office of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in the disputed area on Thursday rejected the legitimacy of the newly appointed administration, and pledged to take Abyei’s case to the International Criminal Court (ICC) demanding that President Omer Hassan Al-Bashir be indicted over atrocities committed there.

The move comes after a strong stance by SPLM Abyei leaders who expressed strong sentiments against military seizure of the area by Sudan Armed Forces in a public meeting held in Juba today.
