Darfur rebels claim "major victory" against Sudanese army

December 23, 2010 (KHARTOUM) - A newly announced Darfur rebel alliance led by the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) inflicted heavy losses on government troops after fierce fighting in Shangili Tobayi, North Darfur state, today.

December 22, 2010 (MARIDI) - Four days before Christmas, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), now based in South Sudan's neighbor, the Central African Republic, are reported to have killed at least two people, injured four and abducted an estimated 50 people in a weekend attack on Zumaro village of, Mboroko locality in Western Equatoria's Maridi County.

Nineteen aid agencies have called for efforts to prevent mass killings by one of Africa's most feared rebel militias over the Christmas period.

Japan provides $52,946 to girls education in West Darfur State

December 20, 2010 (KHARTOUM) - Japan has handed over $52,946 for assisting girls education in Al Genina, the capital of West Darfur state.

The assistance includes 520 set of desks and chairs, and furniture for teachers' offices and the meeting hall. The Japanese embassy in Khartoum says that before the grant students had to sit on the floor during their lessons.

The 900 students at Al Kifah Girls Primary School, who attend the school and teachers will benefit from this project.

Sudan: Vulnerable returnees arrive in Rumbek, Lakes state

December 20, 2010 (RUMBEK) - The government of Lakes state have received 36 returnees from Khartoum on Monday, most of whom are disabled, blind and elderly, according to, Lakes state minister of Legal Affairs, Margaret Samuel Aru.

The returnees were received from Rumbek airport by Lakes state Governor Chol Tong Mayay with his cabinet and Lakes State Assembly speaker John Marik Makur.

This is the first arrival of displaced people in Rumbek, the capital of Lakes state, from Khartoum, apart from 380 people who arrived on Monday after travelling on 21 buses.

DARFUR: Sudan and JEM rebels negotiate ceasefire as LJM deal delayed

December 19, 2010 (DOHA) - Sudanese government and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) will start talks on a cease-fire agreement in Darfur, marking the resumption of direct negotiations after seven months of suspension.

North Bahr el Ghazal returns 9,780 displaced from North Sudan

December 19, 2010 (ABYEI) - Officials from the southern state of northern Bahr el Ghazal on Sunday said it has managed to repatriate 9,780 internally displaced persons from northern Sudan in three consecutive organized returns ahead of the south's referendum on independence.

Speaking to Sudan Tribune from Khartoum, John Agany Deng Kawac, a member of the Khartoum based National Assembly, representing Aweil East County, constituency number 2, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, said they have assisted a total of 9,780 persons from Khartoum in three consecutive returns.

December 16, 2010 (KHARTOUM) - The leader of the SPLM's northern sector, Yasir Arman, has broken a long-standing silence over future of the relationship between the northern sector and the SPLM in south Sudan after the latter's widely expected secession in January 2011.

December 15, 2010 (ABYEI) - Southern officials say that dozens of trucks and buses carrying approximately 6,735 internally displaced persons from the northern states have begun arriving in the town of Aweil town, capital of Northern Bahr el Ghazal.

December 15, 2010 (JUBA) - The deputy representative of United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Southern Sudan, Mireille Girard, Sudan told Sudan Tribune on Wednesday that over 55,000 Southern Sudanese have returned to the south ahead of the region's independence referendum in January. The returnees have arrived through both organized by the autonomous Government of Southern Sudan programs and spontaneously to various states across the south.

Sudan: SPLA denies forces have entered Abyei

December 13, 2010 (ABYEI) - Deng Arop Kuol, chief administrator of the oil-producing region of Abyei on Monday denied that any armed forces belonging to the Sudan People's Liberation Army has entered Abyei town and its surroundings.

On Sunday Colonel Al-Swarmi Khalid Saad, the spokesman of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) controlled by the northern government accused the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) of entering Abyei area with 10 military tanks and 15 Toyota land cruiser vehicles.

Sudan: Independent body warns of future conflict over Abyei

December 09, 2010 (JUBA) - The two parities signatory to Sudan's 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) should strive to ensure that the January 9, 2011 referendum is timely-held in a transparent, free and fair manner, an independent body comprising of eminent global leaders said in a communiqué.

Darfur IPDs and refugees urge rebels' unity before talks

December 7, 2010 (KHARTOUM) - Darfur internally displaced persons (IDPs) urged rebel groups to reunite and coordinated positions before any peace talks with the Sudanese government.

The two main rebel groups in the restive region of Darfur have said they are considering ways to resume or to start talks with Sudanese government in Doha, the official venue for the peace process.
