Floods in Sudan's Jonglei at alarming level - officials

July 28, 2010 (BOR) - At least seven (7) of eleven (11) counties in Sudan's Jonglei state experienced severe floods, an assessment by Southern Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (SSRRC) released on Wednesday and obtained by the Sudan Tribune revealed.

At least five villages are demolished in one County. Shelters, schools and dykes and other flood related damages were reported.

Gabriel Deng, the Jonglei State Director for SSRRC described the flooding in Ayod, Bor, Duk, Akobo, Nyiror, Pibor and Twic East Counties as "alarming".

Four LRA abductees rescued by vigilantes in Sudan's W. Equatoria

July 25, 2010 (YAMBIO) - Four women have been rescued from the Ugandan rebel group the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) by a local vigilante group in Ukuo village in Yambio County.

The vigilante group known as the Arrow Boys also apprehended a senior 'wife' of rebel commander Dominic Ongwen, who was among the LRA leaders the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for in 2005.

Abe Agness, 28, who was abducted in 2000 in Gulu, gave birth to two children, a 5 year-old boy and a 9 month-old girl during her ten year abduction.

Sudan softens stance on adding more Darfur rebel groups to the negotiations

July 22, 2010 (KHARTOUM) - The Sudanese government today appeared to have softened its stance on having more Darfur rebel groups join the peace talks currently underway in the Arab Gulf state of Qatar.

Currently, an umbrella group of various rebel factions known as the Liberty and Justice Movement (LJM) is the only one engaged in talks with the Sudanese government in Doha though little progress appears to have been made.

Sudan's peace partners to begin post-referendum negotiations next week

July 22, 2010 (JUBA) - The two parties to the 2005 North-South peace deal, the National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) are expected to begin negotiations on the post-referendum issues next week, announces the SPLM Deputy Chairperson.

Riek Machar Teny, on Thursday, informed the Southern Sudan 2011 Taskforce that the negotiations will take place in Khartoum on the 27th July to try to resolve on the issues pertaining to the post-2011 referendum arrangements. This week the two parties signed a document on guiding principles for the negotiations.

Finland donates $722k to AU High-Level Implementation Panel on Sudan

July 15, 2010 (ADDIS ABABA) - The Finnish government said it is donating $722,000 in support for the work of the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP).

A statement released by the Finnish Embassy in Addis Ababa said that the contribution is made from the development cooperation funds at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Sudan's peace partners agree to empower North-South border technical committee

July 15, 2010 (JUBA) - The two partners to the 2005 peace deal in Sudan have resolved to establish a four-person subcommittee to assist the North-South border demarcation committee in reaching an agreement on the contentious areas of proposed demarcations.

A joint North-South border demarcation committee comprised of Southern Sudan and Northern Sudan delegates was set up three years ago to identify and demarcate the boundaries after receiving on the proposed borders from the Presidency in Khartoum.

Eritrean refugees in Libya under continuous inhuman treatment - group

July 10, 2010 (ADDIS ABABA) - Hundreds of Eritrean refugees in Libya, who fled their country to escape oppression, are currently facing an inhuman treatment by Libyan authorities. This is because they refuse to fill out a bio-data form in the Eritrean Tigrinya language provided by Eritrean embassy officials and to be photographed, an exiled Eritrean rights group said.

Sudan: Lakes state earns support as insecure state after Jonglei state

July 7, 2010 (RUMBEK) - Lakes state has been prioritized in the second position for support by the Sudan Recovery Fund project after Jonglei state as the most insecure states in Southern Sudan.

WFP to step up food security intervention ahead of referendum in South Sudan

July 7, 2010 (JUBA) - The World Food Program (WFP) has said it will preposition up to eighty thousand (80,000) tons of food in all the ten states of Southern Sudan which can feed about half of the population in the region for six months.

This was declared on Wednesday in a meeting between the Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, and the head of the World Food Program in the region, Amer Daoudi. WFP will also establish a network of wire houses in various counties in Southern Sudan for food storage and distribution centers.

Sudan: Abyei death toll rises to 8 amid fears of reprisal attacks

July 7, 2010 (ABYEI) - The death toll from Monday's clashes in the border town of Abyei has risen to eight people and wounded four others amid fears of reprisal attacks in the coming days.

Five people including the commanding police officer from the region have been confirmed dead and another sustained slight injury in the arm. Reports from military sources in the region on the other hand talk of three people killed in the attack and three others wounded.

Sudan says not concerned with absence of Western envoys from El-Fasher meeting

July 5, 2010 (KHARTOUM) - The Sudanese government today downplayed the significance of absence by the special envoys from U.S., U.K. and France from the meeting held today in North Darfur capital city of El-Fasher to assess the political, humanitarian and security situation.
