Sudan: Inter-Messeriya clashes in Abyei displace over 100 residents in the region

March 31, 2010 (RENK) - Deadly clashes between members of Messeriya pastorals grazing cattle in the area have displaced over one hundred of civilians in the village of Marial Achak, east of Abyei town on Tuesday 30.

The clash which took place at around five o'clock yesterday in the evening is reported to have claimed live of an innocent man and wound more others with one transported to Abyei civil hospital at critical condition. Civilians in the area fled further south of the area in search of safety and security forces are deployed.

Sudanese right activists condemn pre-election arrests, killings in Darfur

March 30, 2010 (JUBA) - Sudan Human Rights Organization (SHRO), a Cairo-based rights body has widely condemned the ongoing series of pre-election arrests, harassments and killings in Sudan's western region of Darfur describing it as "violating the fundamental right to life".

In a statement sent to Sudan Tribune, the rights body, which strives to enforce constitutional guarantees for the right to life, said Khartoum government-backed militias attacked a camp of displaced citizens at Kass, killing civilians and pillaging and harassing victimized families.

Sudan and UNAMID discuss joint cooperation

March 30, 2010 (KHARTOUM) -Sudanese government and Darfur peacekeeping mission discussed yesterday cooperation between two sides to enhance protection of UNAMID members and ensure the security of Darfur civilians.

The meeting took place three weeks after an ambush against a patrol of the UNMID in South Darfur area of Deribat where unidentified armed elements disarmed the 60 members of the patrol form their arms and equipment.

March 26, 2010 (RUMBEK) - The Lakes state caretaker governor, Telar Ring Deng, has condemned the ruthless manner in which army officers involved in disarmament have carried out the activity.

In an exclusive interview with the Catholic Church's Good News Radio FM89, Mr. Telar explained that the use of force by the army officers can only be understood in the context of self defence, namely, "if the Army is confronted by civilians with arms."

Japan to monitor Sudan's general election

March 23, 2010 (KHARTOUM) - The Japanese government intends to send a group of observers to Sudan next April to participate in the monitoring of the first general election in more than 20 years under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

The observation of April election will involve many international, regional and national entities. Carter center, European Union, African Union, China and Russia sent or will delegation to attend this major political event in the country.

Tokyo is expected to send 15-20 personnel, including experts from the private sector and local embassy officials.

South Sudan army accused of killing and raping civilians in C. Equatoria

March 23, 2010 (JUBA) - Southern Sudan army, the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) has been accused of killing and raping civilians in Central Equatoria state.

Arab rights groups call on Mideast leaders to help guide Sudan

March 22, 2010 (CAIRO) - A coalition of Arab rights groups from 20 countries called on the Arab League to "show leadership on Sudan" by getting involved during the potentially volatile upcoming year of elections and referenda.

The groups ask the Arab states to take steps like prioritizing a ceasefire in Darfur and supporting the inclusion of Arab civil society in monitoring elections and the upcoming referenda.

Sudan gives April 2 as deadline to reach Darfur peace deal

The Sudanese Presidential Adviser in charge of Darfur file, Ghazi Salah Al-Deen gave 2nd of April as deadline to reach a peace deal in Darfur, disclosing he will meet rebels in Chad next week. After failing to sign a peace agreement at an initial date, March 15, the Sudanese government and the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) agreed last week in Ndjamena to resume negotiations in Doha to finalize a ceasefire agreement while they continued to exchange propositions on the power and wealth sharing issues.

Sudan, JEM rebels resume indirect talks for peace in Darfur

March 18, 2010 (DOHA) - Sudanese government and the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) have resumed indirect talks facilitated by the Chadian government to break the deadlock and pave the way towards a peace agreement.

Last week, Presidential adviser Ghazi Salah Al-Deen met with JEM leader Khalil Ibrahim in Ndjamena to discuss divergences raised after the signing of a framework agreement last month, but they only agreed that delegations in Doha should continue to finalize a ceasefire agreement.

French group urges pressures to stop violence on Darfur civilians

March 17, 2010 (PARIS) - A French group lobbying for an end to the conflict in Darfur today urged Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to put pressure on the Sudanese government to stop violence on civilians in Jebel Marra.

The Collectif Urgence Darfour (Darfur Emergency Group) asked Kouchner to mobilize European allies and demand to the Sudanese government to stop deadly attacks on civilians in Jebel Marra.

They also asked to mobilize the UN Security Council to condemn these attacks and allow humanitarian aid to reach the affected civilians.

Report: Investigation ordered into corruption at Sudan humanitarian affairs ministry

March 16, 2010 (KHARTOUM) - The Sudanese cabinet issued an unannounced decision to investigate the disappearance of 10 billion pounds from the ministry of humanitarian affairs, a newspaper reported today.

Uganda's Kony may have moved to Darfur, Musevini says

March 12, 2010 (KAMPALA) - The notorious leader of the Lord Resistance Army (LRA) Joseph Kony may have relocated to Sudan's Western of Darfur, the Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni said at a press conference in Kampala today.

"Central African republic allowed our troops to operate there. Our troops have been successfully hunting the LRA rebels and a good number of them have been killed. The rebels have been operating there in three small groups. The Ugandan troops operating there have told me that the group comprising Kony has fled into Darfur," Museveni according to local media.

Sudan and LJM rebels to sign framework agreement next week

March 11, 2010 (DOHA) - The newly formed Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) is expected to sign a framework agreement with the Sudanese government next week in Doha before kicking off separate peace talks.

The other powerful rebel group, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), signed a framework agreement with the government on February 23 but objected to the participation of LJM in the negotiations proposing the latter should unite first with it in order to have one voice to confront Khartoum.

March 8, 2010 (DOHA) - The Sudanese government and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) will start direct peace talks to end the seven year conflict in Doha, for the first time since the signing of the Doha framework agreement on February 23, a top rebel negotiator told Sudan Tribune.

The deal secretly negotiated in Ndjamena and signed last month in Doha by the two warring parties includes a ceasefire agreement, the release of JEM members detained in Khartoum, and the commitment to sign a final peace agreement before March 15 as well as political partnership between the two signatories.

March 7, 2010 (KHARTOUM) - About 21 people were killed in tribal fighting that had occurred last week between Abdalla Maharia and Misseriya, in Khaur Ramla west of Nertiti, West Darfur, a local official told the AFP today.

Darfur rebels said last Friday that 15 people were killed and accused Khartoum government of instigating the clashes, but the governor Abu Al-Gassim Imam Al-Haj stated today the death toll raised to 21.

March 4, 2010 (DOHA) - The Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid Al Nur (SLM-AW) said today that tribal clashes between two Arab tribes in West Darfur State led to the death of 15 people and accused Sudanese government of instigating the violence.

12 people killed in fight over cattle in S. Sudan's Lakes

March 1, 2010 (RUMBEK) - Pastoralists from the counties of Yirol East and Yirol West resumed deadly cattle raiding from Friday until Sunday, February 26-28, 2010, resulting in 12 people dying in the clashes and 24 people confirmed seriously wounded, according to a Yirol West County hospital official.

An unconfirmed report from Yirol East County indicated that an additional 10 people were killed and 3 wounded.
