Joint Mediator urges civil society to promote culture of peace in Darfur

January 1, 2010 (KHARTOUM) - Darfur joint mediator, Djibril Bassole has urged the civil society representatives to promote culture of peace in the troubled western Sudan.

Sudan, UNAMID ink protocol to protect Darfur peacekeepers

December 29, 2009 (KHARTOUM) - Sudanese government and the hybrid peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID) signed today a protocol including safety measures to ensure the security of the peacekeepers working in the restive region.

The deal comes after the killing of 20 peacekeepers in violence since the African Union United Nation operation took over from the African mission in January 2008. Also two civilian personnel had been abducted last August and only released some 100 days after earlier this month.

Sudan reaffirmed commitment to provide a suitable atmosphere for the start of next round of talks with Darfur rebel groups, stressing keenness to make progress in the negotiations before the elections scheduled for April 2010.

Chadian rebels accused of intimidating civilians in North Darfur

December 19, 2009 (KHARTOUM) - Chadian rebels are accused of looting livestock and intimidating civilians in North Darfur state after being deployed by the Sudanese government in one of the state locations. The violence triggered the displacement the residents from the areas.

Sudan: Two peacekeepers are killed in North Darfur

December 4, 2009 (KHARTOUM) - The joint African Union-United Nations mission in Darfur (UNAMID) lost today two soldiers who were killed in an attack by unknown hostiles in North Darfur.
