Singapore opens S$5m nursery school in Shichigahama

Town was hit by 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

The Singapore Red Cross, together with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and local Shichigahama officials today opened the Shichigahama Toyama Nursery School, marking a major milestone in the rebuilding efforts following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The ceremony was attended by Guest-of-Honour Mr Sam Tan, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Culture, Community and Youth and Mr Yoshio Watanabe, Mayor of Shichigahama Town.

Donated hospital equipment of 2008 helps survivors of Sichuan earthquake

Contributions from People of Singapore continue to improve lives in China

Singapore’s contributions for the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake is making a lasting impact. Donated hospital equipment is now used to treat survivors of the earthquake that struck Sichuan again on 20 April 2013.

Following the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake, the Singapore Red Cross donated S$2 million of medical equipment to several hospitals in the region. These were distributed to Sichuan Orthopedic Hospital and three of its affiliated county hospitals in Tianquan, Kangding and Ziyang.

Earthquake survivors in Yunnan and Guizhou - Singapore Red Cross extends S$200,000 humanitarian aid

The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) will contribute S$200,000 worth of rice to survivors of the earthquakes in Yunnan, China. Almost 200 tonnes of rice will be distributed by a disaster response team from the SRC, who will arrive in the affected localities on Friday. The five-person team will distribute the rice to residents who are being relocated to temporary evacuation centres.

Singapore affirms commitment to rebuild lives in Japan after the 2011 disaster

Japan, 5 June 2012 – Singapore Foreign Minister Mr K Shanmugam and his Japanese counterpart Mr Koichiro Gemba today witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between Mr Tee Tua Ba, Chairman, Singapore Red Cross (SRC), HE Chin Siat Yoon, Ambassador, Republic of Singapore to Japan and Mr Hidekiyo Tachiya, Mayor, Soma City, to reconstruct the Isobe community centre in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture. The project is one of four reconstruction projects undertaken by the SRC in the Tohoku region.

Singapore Red Cross donates USD$100 000 to help Lao communities affected by the floods

The Singapore Red Cross donates USD 100,000 to aid the Lao people affected by the recent floods in Laos caused by Typhoons Haima and Nockten. Besides the loss of lives, the floods resulted in widespread damage to transportation, agriculture and irrigation systems. The floods also wiped out much of the crops, including the rice harvest, in the affected areas. The Lao Red Cross will use the donation to provide food and other essential supplies to the farmers and others affected by the floods in the Southern province of Champasak.

The team will be spending their New Year’s Eve there and returning on the same evening.

Singapore Red Cross donates inflatable boats to Thailand for flood relief

Singapore, 8 November 2011 – The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has contributed 18 units of inflatable rubber boats to the Thai Red Cross to support their relief efforts in addressing Thailand’s worst flood woes. All 18 boats were received by the Thai Ambassador, His Excellency Nopadol Gunavibool at the Royal Thai Embassy in Singapore today at 4pm. The Embassy will assist to sea freight to Bangkok tomorrow. The boats and accessories cost a total of S$50,000, and each boat can carry as much as 560kg.

Singapore Red Cross donates 1 million face masks to Indonesia for relief operations at Mount Merapi

The Singapore Red Cross freighted 1,000,000 pieces of face masks to the Indonesian Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia - PMI) for distribution to survivors and relief workers of the recent Mount Merapi eruptions.

Indonesia: Singapore Red Cross Aids Survivors In Mentawai Islands

Singapore Red Cross Secretary General Christopher Chua visited the Indonesian Red Cross ("Palang Merah Indonesia or PMI") between 31 October to 2 November 2010 to assess the impact of the disaster, and to understand its relief operations plan at the Mentawai Islands.

On 22 October, an earthquake triggered a tsunami that struck the Mentawai Islands off Western Sumatra. A week after the tsunami, 431 people have now been confirmed dead with 88 still missing.
