Interview with Lucas Riegger, Regional Humanitarian Affairs Officer in Mali

One year after the food crisis and the takeover of northern territories of the country by armed groups in Mali, the humanitarian situation is critical and its effects are making themselves felt throughout the region. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) has been in the country for 35 years, and has had to adapt to these successive crises. Since mid-February 2013, Lucas Riegger, a member of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit, has been providing support for the activities of the SDC’s Cooperation Office (Coof).

Switzerland promotes broad-based growth in Burkina Faso and Mozambique

On 8 May 2013 the Federal Council decided to grant Burkina Faso and Mozambique general budgetary assistance of CHF 32 million each for the years 2013 to 2016. This will support both countries in implementation of their poverty reduction strategies, which focus on broad-based and sustainable growth.

Interview with Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS during his visit to Bern on 13 May 2013

Worldwide efforts to combat HIV/AIDS have made remarkable progress in recent years, and the experts are even looking forward to bringing the epidemic to an end. Much remains to be done, however, particularly as far as access to care services and non-discrimination against those infected are concerned. SDC supports Disaster risks reduction strategies in the Arab world

Arab states are often confronted with natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, and floods that cause severe damages and affect a great number of victims. These phenomena have highlighted the increasing vulnerability of cities in the Middle East and Northern Africa. To address this issue, representatives of Arab states and development agencies are gathering in Aqaba, Jordan, for the first regional conference on disaster and risk reduction in the Arab region. SDC is co-organizing this event together with Jordanian authorities and United Nations (UN) partners.

Switzerland joins “Friends of Yemen” group

Today marks the start of Swiss membership of “Friends of Yemen”, a group of over 30 states and several organisations which exists to support political transition in Yemen. At today’s meeting in London, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter mentioned that between 2012 and 2014 Switzerland has provided around CHF 20 million to support political stabilisation and improve the humanitarian situation in the country.

Switzerland presents Country Strategy Kosovo 2013 - 2016

Today Switzerland presented the Country Strategy Kosovo 2013 to 2016 of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). In her opening remarks, the Swiss Ambassador Krystyna Marty highlighted the strong relations between the two countries and underlined the continuing commitment of Switzerland towards Kosovo’s successful transition.

With 2012 coming to an end, SDC looks back on the achievements of its programmes and partners in the domains of livelihood and governance. The first article highlights some of the main results of both domains. As an important partner in strengthening civil society and promoting human rights, the Civil Society and Human Rights Network (CSHRN) points out the progress civil society made in 2012 but also mentions the challenges CSHRN and its member organizations had to tackle to implement their programmes.

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the German International Cooperation (GIZ) support Centers of Competence in Westbank

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Higher Education, the new joint cooperation program between SDC and GIZ , “Promotion of Youth employabilty in the Palestinian Territories” was Launched today in Ramallah. The Swiss intervention will contribute to the transformation of existing Palestinian Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions into Regional Centers of Competence in specialized occupations.

SDC signs MoU with the Government of KPK

In the spirit of mutual cooperation, this three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will support the SDC-funded sustainable development programme in the province.

The MoU defines overall collaboration between the SDC, the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation (HSI). It supports the implementation of the Livelihoods Programme Hindukush and the Water for Livelihoods Project aiming to improve the quality of life and reducing vulnerability of marginalised communities.

Switzerland provides additional funds to the Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund (BCCRF)

Switzerland will provide an additional grant of USD 8.6 million for the Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund (BCCRF) in order to help Bangladesh better cope with the adverse impacts of climate change, and to carry out climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. The Ambassador of Switzerland to Bangladesh, Dr. Urs Herren met with the Honourable Minister of Environment and Forests, Dr. Hasan Mahmud, MP, at his office in the Secretariat on November 26, 2012 to inform about the decision of the Swiss Government.

SHA completes life-saving water project in Punjab

Switzerland has just completed a project providing water for the flood-affected population in Rajanpur District in Punjab Province, which according to the United Nations was one of the districts most affected by the 2012 floods. According to official figures, more than 270,000 people were affected and 26 people lost their lives during these latest floods in Rajanpur.

Since the outbreak of the conflict in March 2011, the humanitarian situation in Syria has continued to deteriorate. The violent confrontations are causing severe suffering in the civilian population; there are shortages of medical care, food, and water. More than 300,000 people have fled to neighbouring countries. We asked Manuel Bessler, Humanitarian Aid Delegate of the Swiss Confederation, about the support being provided by humanitarian aid actors in the field.

Swiss Cooperation Office Afghanistan launched “10 Stories” booklet on the occasion of its 10-year anniversary

The “10 Stories – 10 years of SDC engagement in Afghanistan” booklet was launched on October 9, 2012, in Kabul. The booklet portrays ten personalities - SDC partners, ben­eficiaries from different projects, civil society and government repre­sentatives and gives the SDC engagement in the country a human face. Besides the launch of the booklet, SDC also screened the trailer of the “10 Stories” video.

Inauguration of two permanent schools in Haïti

Programme of support for the reconstruction of school infrastructure

1,600 pupils were able to resume their school studies following the inauguration of the Ecole nationale de Dessources in Léogane and the Ecole fondamentale et Centre d’appui pédagogique (EFACAP) du Sacré-Cœur in Petit-Goâve on 10 October 2012. These are the first permanent school buildings that have been reconstructed in the country following the devastating earthquake of 12 January 2010. Both schools comply with anti-seismic and anti-cyclonic standards.

A helping hand for a life with dignity: 176 resettled families benefit from livelihood assistance

The conflict in Sri Lanka displaced thousands of people in the northern districts. While affected civilians have returned or are returning to their villages in the devastated northern districts of Sri Lanka, they still have no or very limited resources to cope with the multifold challenges of day to day life. Key humanitarian requirements like reconstruction efforts are being addressed, but other smaller but unmet and urgent needs remain on the ground, which need to be addressed. Above all the returnees need support to restore their livelihoods and stabilize their income sources.

Due to the deteriorating security, SDC’s office in Damascus has temporarily been closed and programs are coordinated from SDC’s office in Amman.

SDC focuses its efforts on the protection and assistance of the affected population in Syria and those fleeing their home to the neighboring countries.

For the population in Syria:

  • ICRC: CHF 1.75 Mio allocated for the 2011 and 2012 Syria Appeals

  • WFP: CHF 1 Mio for emergency food assistance
