Since Israel tightened its closure of the Gaza Strip in 2007, severely restricting the import of fuel and construction materials, repairing and maintaining the waste management facilities to meet the needs of the people of the Gaza Strip has become near impossible. Sanitation conditions are rapidly deteriorating and, if the problem is not rapidly addressed, this could have a major impact on the health of the people of the Gaza Strip.

Narratives: "If you wanted to live, you left"

Today is Nakba Day, the day on which Palestinians mourn the loss of their homeland in 1948. 65 years ago, in May of 1948, Ghatheyya Mifleh al-Khawalda was a carefree 15-year-old girl who lived with her mother and sister in the village of al-Qastina in Mandatory Palestine, when they were forced, along with the rest of their village, to flee in the face of imminent threat from Jewish militias. For some time, the people of al-Qastina had received word of terrible attacks against other villages nearby, in which many had died.

PCHR opens international legal conference in Malaga

This morning, on Tuesday 23 April 2013, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) opened the international legal conference it organizes in Malaga, titled “Pursuing justice and redress for Palestinian victims: developing strategies for advocacy and litigation”. This is the fourth conference of its kind organized by PCHR, in close cooperation with international partners, especially Al Quds Malaga, and attended by Palestinian, Israeli, and international human rights organizations and lawyers.

Narratives: “Everything we owned was destroyed in the attack.”

During the recent Israeli offensive, ‘Operation Pillar of Defence’ (14 – 21 November 2012), Israeli forces attacked streets, family homes, and civilian buildings in densely populated areas, causing injuries and deaths amongst civilians, and extensive destruction to civilian property in the Gaza Strip. 127 civilian houses were completely destroyed, another 153 civilian houses were extensively damaged and more than 600 houses sustained minor damage.

Letter from Human Rights Organisations to the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process

6 April 2013

Four human rights organisations based in the Gaza Strip, along with the Palestinian NGO Network, have issued a letter to Mr Robert H. Serry, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, expressing concern at a number of recent statements he has made.

Al Dameer Association for Human Rights, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), and the Palestinian NGO Network issued the letter on 6 April 2013.

Penalising the Victim: Recent Israeli Measures to Deny Palestinian Civilians' Right to Reparation

In February 2013, the Israeli Southern Central Court in Be’er Sheva dismissed 14 civil claims cases brought before it by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR). These cases sought compensation and reparations for the deaths, injuries, and material losses suffered by Palestinian civilians due to alleged violations of international law committed during Israeli military attacks.

During the reporting period, a Palestinian civilian died from earlier tear gas inhalation and another one was wounded in the West Bank.

On 14 March 2013, a Palestinian boy was seriously wounded by a bullet to the chest when the Israeli forces stationed on watchtowers, west of Tulkram, opened fire at him while he was in Netanya Street near the abovementioned area.

Narratives: "I risk my life when I go fishing, but what choice do I have?"

Mahmoud Mohammed Jarboa (52) is a fisherman from Beach Camp, Gaza City, and a father of ten children, seven sons and three daughters. Mahmoud relies on the income he and his sons make from fishing to support 21 dependents. For many years, Mahmoud has suffered from the restrictions placed on access to the Palestinian territorial waters off the coast of the Gaza Strip.
