Micronesia: Chuuk needs six months to recover from typhoon

30 AUGUST 2002 CHUUK (Pacnews) ---- FSM President Leo Falcam says it will take Chuuk State at least another six months to recover from the damage wrought by Typhoon Chata'an in July, according to the Pacific Daily News newspaper.

The typhoon struck Chuuk on 2 July, causing more than 30 landslides that killed 47 people and destroyed hundreds of homes and vital food crops.

The newspaper reported that around one thousand people have been displaced out of a population of 47,000.

A shipment of supplies collected by the Salvation Army left Guam bound for Chuuk yesterday.

PNG: Govt commits K2m for volcano relief

22 AUGUST 2002 PORT MORESBY (Pacnews) ---- Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has pledged two million kina (US$516,500) in relief for communities around the erupting Mount Pago volcano in the country's West New Britain province.

"Food gardens, water sources and oil palm plantations within the vicinity of Mount Pago have been drastically affected," Sir Michael said in a statement today.

"An estimated 30,000 people have been affected, of which 12,000 have left their villages and another 8,000 are housed in six care centres.

PNG landslide buries 34 people

03 APRIL 2002 PORT MORESBY (Pacnews) -- A landslide in Papua New Guinea has buried three villages with thirty four people in the Markham district of the Morobe Province.

Twenty-two people are still missing while eight bodies have been retrieved from the debris.

Morobe Provincial administrator, Manasupe Zurenuoc said an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale was felt in the Markham area on Monday.

Local officials say a tremor was centred in the neighbouring Tewai Siassi district while heavy rains in the region

Tahiti approves US$770,000 Tonga aid package

21 JANUARY 2002 PAPE'ETE (Pacnews) -- The Assembly of French Polynesia has approved a US$770,000 aid package for the Kingdom of Tonga to assist the country's recovery from Cyclone Waka.

A team of three experts and technicians made their recommendations to the government after returning late last week from a fact-finding mission to Tonga Gaston Flosse, French Polynesia's President, said Tahiti will send US$154,000 worth of food aid and "loggers" from Tahiti's Department for Rescue Operations. Tonga: US donates $25k for cyclone relief

17 JANUARY 2002 SUVA (Pacnews) -- The US Embassy in Fiji has donated US$25,000 to the Tongan Government for cyclone relief.

The US funds will be used primarily to replace foodstuffs destroyed by the storm, said US Charge d'Affaires Ron McMullen. According to Tongan Prime Minister 'Ulukalala Lavaka-Ata, Cyclone Waka was the worst to hit Tonga since 1961..."
