Red Cross prepares for major disasters in Nepal

The Red Cross has started a new programme helping people in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, become better prepared for disasters.

The Kathmandu Valley faces a significant risk of catastrophic earthquakes and its people also experience many other disasters on a frequent basis, including fire, flash floodings, disease epidemics, storm damage, water shortages and landslides.

All modern-day armed conflicts have left behind problems of explosive remnants of war (ERW), usually for years or even decades after the conflict ended. Nepal is no exception and during the decade-long conflict the parties to the conflict used improvised explosive devices (IEDs), landmines and other types of explosive devices. Due to the nature of the conflict, explosive ordnance contamination was widespread and has affected many different districts in all five regions of the country.

Developing school safety culture: teachers and students plan for emergency

Mrs Sita Tamang is a teacher at Bhairum School, nearly two kilometres drive from the headquarters of Nuwakot district. She has been in this profession for 18 years (in her 40’s) as she started teaching after she passed school leaving certificate. However, she never came across any initiative at school unless the Disaster Preparedness for School Safety (DPSS) programme launched.

Introduction

This report reviews Nepal’s legal and policy framework for disaster response with a focus on large-scale emergencies that exceed national coping capacities. It analyses Nepal’s legal preparedness for disasters by assessing its legal framework against key international standards.

The study aims to:

  • Identify gaps and areas of good practice in addressing legal issues and implementing the key regional and international instruments relevant to disasters in Nepal.

British Red Cross Expanded Support on DRR

British Red Cross (BRC) has expanded its support on Kathmandu-based Disaster Risk Reduction Project considering the potential earthquake risks here. David peppiatt international division director of BRC paid a visit to Nepal from February 20 to 24 to observe its DRR projects and reach to an understanding with NRCS about launching project in Kathmandu as a part of Flagship 4 program. Flagship program is an international consortium to support national strategy for disaster risk reduction.

Day (December 5) with various programmes and activities across the country, under the slogan "FIND VOLUNTEER INSIDE YOU." The organization organized art competition among school children, essay and poem competitions among NRCS youth volunteers in the capital city, Kathmandu and similar activities across the country.

Missing persons in Nepal: the right to know

The 1996-2006 conflict in Nepal brought tragedy for many families: over a thousand families still do not know what happened to a relative. International humanitarian law requires authorities to account for people who go missing, and to give families all the information they have on their fate and whereabouts. The ICRC and the Nepal Red Cross Society maintain contact with the families of missing persons across Nepal and encourage the former parties to the conflict to clarify the fate of those who remain unaccounted for.

The fortieth General Assembly (GA) of the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) held in Bhaktapur from 27 to 29 April elected 22 Central Executive Members (CEC) and the Chairman for next four years. The GA elected Sanjeev Thapa, Chairman of the NRCS for the second term.

WatSan trainers developed for emergency response

Twenty four national level disaster response trainers have been developed in Nepal on emergency water and sanitation (WatSan) in the support of the Netherlands Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The persons trained on WatSan were the volunteers and staff of the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), government officials and an official of the Oxfam. The training was jointly organized by the NRCS and IFRC from 10 to 15 June 2011 in Kathmandu.

NRCS preventive actions before diarrhea outbreak

With the monsoon, the community people of the mid western and far western regions are afraid of the acute watery diarrhea outbreak. In the last monsoon, the diarrhea claimed 370 lives and made 60,000 persons sick. Nineteen districts were affected. Women, children and elderly people were found more vulnerable after the outbreak.

Nepal: Communities changed behaviour through WATSAN programme

Hasta Lal Pun Magar, 40, of Kotgaun- 8, Rolpa, has now a toilet, a washing platform, a utensil drying stand and garbage pit in his home. He produces vegetables in his own kitchen garden. His family now uses toilet regularly and wash their hands with soap water after toilets and before every meal. "I would like to thank the Red Cross for developing my awareness about the importance of personal hygiene and assisting me to construct sanitary units at home," he shared in the annual review and planning workshop.

Nepal Red Cross Society provides first-aid to injured during protests

Kathmandu (NRCS/ICRC) - The first aid teams of the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) in Kathmandu have been busy providing medical care to persons who were injured during the street protests and gatherings marking the first of the countrywide three-day general strike called by United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M).

Building Communication Capacity in Eastern Nepal

Nepal Red Cross has witnessed series of global and local challenges regarding increased humanitarian crisis through natural disaster, health in emergency as well as socio-political changes along with the peace process in Nepal.

Severe floods and landslides in Koshi Zone of Eastern Nepal and the unexpected heavy rainfall beyond normal rainy season in the western Nepal brought about different sorts of human sufferings resulting into displacement of thousands of families and households.
