More than 12,000 awaiting humanitarian assistance in Tonj

(23rd May, 2013) - The Commissioner of Tonj North County, Warrap State, said more than twelve thousand (12,000) people in his county are still waiting for urgent food assistance.

Speaking to Radio Miraya, Marko Awoj Kuot, said the World Food Program had promised to deliver food to his county but they have not yet received anything.

The United Nations humanitarian agency (UNOCHA) recently reported some 3,700 people are targeted for direct food assistance, with the remaining to receive food for work under the Food for Assets scheme.

Alarm raised over land mines in Unity State

22nd May, 2013) - Authorities in Rubkona County of Unity State are raising concern about the existence of land mines in Kaljak Payam.

Speaking to Radio Miraya the payam administrator, Charles Mut Babur says mines exist mainly by the river side in Boitong area.

Mut said many of the mines were remnants from the Sudan civil war.

Unity’s revenge attack leaves five dead

(14 May 2013) - Five people have been killed in an inter-tribal clash in Unity State.

The State’s deputy governor, Michael Chanjiak Gai, told Radio Miraya that the fighting occurred on Monday morning, at the border between Mayom and Koch counties.

Chanjiak said the clashes appear to have been a revenge attack for a cattle raid in Koch County last week in which one person was killed.

“Some youth from Koch County went and attacked youth of Mayom in a place called Rier that incident came as a result of cattle theft.”

90 Meningitis cases diagnosed in Upper Nile

(12th May, 2013) - The number of cases in a Meningitis outbreak has risen to 90 in Upper Nile State, Health Minister Michael Milly Hussein said.

He said the situation was under control, but warned the outbreak is an alarm bell to states in the northern part of the country that lie within the meningitis belt.

People should minimize socialization to reduce the spread and immediately report suspected cases of the disease for quick intervention, Mr Milly said.

Agencies to rush aid for Panyijar hunger

(7th May, 2013) - Humanitarian agencies are working on emergency interventions for communities facing hunger in Panyijar, Unity State, where at least 20 starved to death in April.

700 refugees relocated from Jamam camp

(8th May, 2013) - About 700 Sudanese refugees have been relocated from Jamam camp to Kaya, both in Upper Nile state, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has said.

The move, which could see all the 18,000 refugees camped Jamam relocated to the new camp, is in search for better services, the UNHCR said.

“No one is being forced to go, but the conditions and the infrastructure at the Kaya camp are better than those at the Jamam site where they are now,” said Tim Irwin, UNHCR spokesperson.

Three dead, 70 under meningitis treatment in Malakal

(6th May, 2013) - Three people are reported dead and seventy more are receiving treatment of meningitis in Malakal Teaching Hospital in Upper Nile State.

The State’s Health Minister, Charles Yor Odhok, said ten centers have been identified for the meningitis vaccination. “We have seven health centers functioning in the town and then we will establish other three places in the sites which were known to citizens through the malaria campaign last year. We have one in Hai Tenmaia, Hai Salam and Hai Mathar,” he told Radio Miraya on Thursday.

Ex-militias receive food and non-food items

(2nd May, 2013) - The government is providing food and non-food items to ex-militias who have laid down their guns in response to a presidential pardon.

About 900 former fighters and their families, who are camped in Mayom County, are beneficiaries of the assistance, Deputy Unity State Governor Michael Chanjiak said.

Chanjiak said officials were meeting with the communities within Mayom to urge them to peacefully coexist with the ex-militias as they await transportation to Juba.

Landmines hamper farming in Upper Nile

(2nd May, 20130 – Landmines planted by anti-government forces are hampering farming in Manyo County in Upper Nile State, Commissioner Gai Lul said.

“We are requesting assistance from demining groups to come in at least to clear the area,” Mr Lul told Radio Miraya.

He said the landmines have been impeding cultivation for the last two years. The armed groups were loyal to Johnson Uliny, a beneficiary of a recent president pardon.

20 starve to death in Unity State

(29th April, 2013) - Twenty people are believed to have starved to death in Panyijar County, Commissioner Simon Chol Biel said.

Mr Chol said the hunger was brought on by floods that destroyed crops and cattle raids that left communities without a source of livelihood.

"The deaths were reported in April alone", he said.

“I was told sixteen people died in Nyal but when I went to Ganyliel to return the cattle back to Nyang county, four people died of hunger in my presence,” Chol told Radio Miraya.

370000 farmers to receive seeds & tools

(26th April 2013) - Humanitarian agencies say they plan to supply seeds and tools to over 370,000 small-scale farmers across South Sudan.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) says providing seeds and tools is an important way of solving food shortages in the country.

The priority is to reach farmers with these supplies soon, to enable them to plant crops before the peak of the rainy season, around August.

A shortage of funds will prevent this aid reaching another 150,000 farmers, according to the UNOCHA report, issued on Wednesday.

June start for $80m Juba Bridge

(25th April 2013) - The Japanese government will start in June to rebuild Juba Bridge at a cost of US$ 80 million.

The Japanese government’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will use stronger, more permanent materials that can sustain heavy traffic.

JICA chief representative in South Sudan Atsushi Hanatani says the bridge will be completed in 2016.

Hanatani said the reconstruction of Juba Bridge is one of three projects the Japanese government is to start this year.

Seven people killed in Gogrial cattle raids

(23rd April 2013) - At least seven people are reported to have been killed and eleven others wounded in two separate cattle raids in Gogrial East County of Warrap State.

No cattle were taken in either attack, Gogrial East County commissioner, Akot Lual Akot said.

He continued to say that calm had returned to the area and called on communities to remain that way.

“I am telling my people to remain calm, not to make any revenge, because we are southerners, the same people.”

New camp to reduce Doro congestion

(19th April 2013) - The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) is set to open a new refugee camp in Upper Nile State to reduce congestion in Doro camp.

The camp in Kaya will take up to twenty thousand people and is expected to be opened next month.

UNHCR Country Representative, Cosmas Chanda said the new camp is meant to ease congestion Doro camp in Maban County, “because it’s prone to flooding.”

“There are some refugees who reside in low lying areas and the priority is for us to relocate those.”

Calm returns to Budi after raid

(19th April 2013) - It is now calm in Budi County in Eastern Equatoria State after suspected cattle raiders killed at least eight people and stole more than 700 cattle a week ago.

Security forces have been deployed in the area to prevent further attacks and efforts are being made to recover the stolen cattle, state information minister Felix Otuduho said.

Eyewitnesses told Radio Miraya that some medical workers were killed and a health center was destroyed during a cattle recovery operation in Lorema village.

80 protest in Aweil against expulsions

(18th April 2013) - 80 women and children peacefully protested in Aweil on Wednesday about losing their homes in Maper North, and asked the legislative assembly to help.

They said individuals from the host community had claimed the plots where they live; plots which were recently defined by Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.

The ladies handed a petition to Speaker Achol William Amoui, who said the Assembly will meet the State Minister of Physical Infrastructure to resolve the issue.

Twich East blames water inaccessibility for conflicts

(18th April 2012) - Ayual community in Twic East county of Jonglei State says water inaccessibility is contributing to inter-communal violence.

Competition over limited water points and land for grazing cattle led to the latest clashes between Ayual and Dachuek communities in the county, said Philip Dau Thiang, Ayual Community deputy chairman.

Mr. Dau said he has presented an appeal to Vice President Riek Machar, calling for creation of more water points.
