Zimbabwe Logistics Cluster response to cholera outbreak situation report, 06 Apr 2009

1. HIGHLIGHTS

Logistics cluster support to the humanitarian partners working in the cholera response in Zimbabwe in ongoing. Since the beginning of the logistics cluster operation an estimated 250 mt of NFIs have been moved through the cluster, while 2'200 sqm of transhipment storage space is being currently in use by UNICEF and WHO to store much needed cholera response items such as oral rehydratation salts, water purification tablets, Diarrheal Disease kits, IV fluids, buckets, soap, etc.

1. HIGHLIGHTS

The trend in reported cholera cases shows a decline in most part of the country. According to WHO reports, Harare and Chitungwiza remain districts of concern. In light of those latest developments, the scope and extent of the logistics cluster support will be discussed during the next logistics cluster to ensure that cluster activities are kept in line with the humanitarian community's needs. CHOLERA OUTBREAK & LOGISTICS CLUSTER

In response to the severe cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe that as affected, so far, 90,000 persons and claimed more than 4,000 lives, the Logistics Cluster has been established to support the humanitarian community in their emergency response. The Logistics Cluster, along with secondary transport, provides relief organizations with five interagency hubs spread over the country.

1. HIGHLIGHTS

A Logistics Cluster meeting was held on the 27th February in Harare with participation of UNICEF, WHO Zimbabwe, WHO Geneva, IFRC, SAVE THE CHILDREN, MSF Holland, GOAL Ireland, WFP.

A new 500smq warehouse has been made available to the humanitarian community in Harare.

Next Logistics Cluster Meeting is on 11 March 2009, WFP Country office Harare.

Zimbabwe logistics cluster: Prioritization of assistance

"One of the most important aims of the Cluster Approach, is to improve strategic field-level coordination and prioritization in specific sectors/areas of response"

'Prioritisation' is embedded in both the Terms of Reference of a Cluster Lead, as well as the IASC Guidance Note that outlines the new architecture for humanitarian response.

As such the Cluster Lead is responsible for setting the priorities of their particular sectoral response. Then, within the Humanitarian Country Team, overall priorities should be established and represented through the Humanitarian Coordinator.

Zimbabwe Logistics Cluster: Standard Operating Procedures 04 Mar 2009

Overview

This document provides an overview of the transport and logistics services being offered by the Logistics Cluster to all humanitarian actors, for the coordinated movement of humanitarian assistance in response to the cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe. These services are provided to facilitate the operations of the humanitarian actors working in the cholera response in Zimbabwe and to fill in warehousing, transport, coordination, information management gaps identified by the actors on the ground.

These services will be provided on a
