New camps as floods displace more people in Nyando

The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) has set up new displaced people’s (IDPs) camps in several parts of Nyando District after major rivers and streams within the District burst their banks over the weekend. The rivers that pose major challenges to the affected communities are River Nyando and River Miriu. Following heavy rains in the District over the weekend of 10th – 12th May; 2013, at least three schools including Ahero Girls Secondary School, Kokwach and Apondo primary schools have been closed after River Nzoia burst its banks.

Deaths, injuries and displacement in fresh Mandera conflict

At least two people have been confirmed dead in an ongoing clan clash in Rhamu –Mandera.The clashes, which began today 10th May 2013, at around 6.30am, has seen at least 8hours of non-stop blood battle and has grown more intense with no indication of when it will come to a halt.

The Kenya Red Cross Society, Mandera Branch is currently responding to the conflict and have transferred five casualties to the Mandera District Hospital, although they had initially taken them to the Rhamu Hospital.

Kenya Red Cross Receives Ksh. 10 M from Safaricom for Flood Victims Rescue Efforts

Safaricom Foundation on Friday 3rd May 2013, donated Kshs.10 million to fund rescue efforts for flood victims following a USD 3.5 million (Kshs.292, 950,000) appeal by the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS). Heavy rains in the last two-months have resulted in at least 74 reported deaths and more than 100,000 people homeless while exposing hundreds of others to malaria, dengue fever and other flood related risks.

In Garissa County, North Eastern, water levels in Tana River are steady at 473mm. House holds (HH) that had camped in Umusalama (120 HH), Hyuga (186 HH) and have (289 HH) have left the camps and gone back to their villages although they still have no access to clean water and latrines.

Floods Update As At 23rd April 2013

On 19th and 20th April 2013, a team of 3 volunteers from the KRCS Holla Branch went out on a response after they received a report that 205 household had been displaced from Kiembeni village to Daku, Kumbi and Rhoka primary schools. The team was out on an assessment to view the gravity of the situation. The team found some of the households had tried to evacuate to higher grounds.

Thousands Marooned By Floods In Isiolo

At least 8,000 people have been marooned in Isiolo County following heavy rains in the area for the last two weeks. In Korbesa village at least 820 households (HH) have been affected with roads from Merti cut off. Further, there is food shortage with villagers not being able to access shops and markets and the few accessible ones have hiked prices, posing a purchase challenge for the villagers.

Coastal Region Floods Update As At 11th April 2013

The Coast Region is continuing to experience floods with the most recent occurrences being reported in Malindi. The area affected is Bate in Bungale Location of Marafa Division in Magarini District. The villages affected are Mandiri, Mkokoani, Kabelengani, Mayoe, Bate A and B, Migumoni A and B, Makaramuni and Matimbeni. With the exception of Bate all the other villages are inaccessible by road as the roads are cut off.

Floods in West Kenya Displace Many, Leaves a Trail of Destruction

Heavy rains in areas of West Kenya Region have left several households (HH) displaced as well as destruction of property and livelihoods. The heavy rains have been experienced in the area for the past one week.

In the larger Nyakach area namely Asao, Gem, Gem and North Nyakach, at least 639 HH have been affected with the heavy rains. The most common destruction in these areas is collapsed latrines, contamination of water sources, and total collapse of houses, food stores destroyed, farms swept away and livestocks dead.

1198 Households Affected by Floods in Bura, Tana River

At least 1,198 Households (HH) have been affected by heavy flooding following an increased heavy downpour in Bura Division in Tana North District of Tana River County.

The heavy rains started on Sunday 31st March, 2013 in Bura and its environs leading to several rivers and laghas bursting their banks. The laghas include Hirimani, Walesa and Gelmad which got filled up by water from neighboring Eastern Province. The most affected locations are Chwele, Nanighi and Bura. Eight donkeys were also killed in Hirimani location.

Livelihoods Changed through Food Security in Turkana – Thanks to Kenyans for Kenya

The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) through the Kenyans for Kenya Drought Initiative of 2011 identified parts of the Turkana County as one of the Regions that were going to gain from an early recovery initiatives that was aimed at opening up land to irrigation in Kaikor location, Turkana North District, targeting three villages with a total population of 15,398 people as a Disaster Risk Reduction aimed at building community resilience and enhancing food security. The community is predominantly pastoralists.

One person injured and 127 households left homeless as rains cause havoc in western region

The Western Region has been experiencing heavy rains in the last one week that has left 127 households affected and one person injured with a broken leg.

On Tuesday 14th March 2013 at around 5 pm, a strong wind storm swept through Vihiga, Hamisi and Sabatia Constituencty as well as leaving at least 61 households homeless and one person injured with a broken leg.

Nine security officers were reported dead after an alleged attack by militants in Mikindani, Jomvu, Coast Region. Four other officers were reportedly injured with one having deep cuts on the head, another one with arrow shots in the stomach and two others with injuries on their legs.

Four Lives Lost in Rhamu, Mandera County Clash

Four people lost their lives and another 21 injured, 3 of the critical after a clash erupted between the Gare and Degodia clans of Rhamu, Mandera County, also rendering at least 7,000 people homeless. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday 28th February 2013, left property worth thousands of shillings destroyed and houses burnt down.

Renewed Conflict in Kuria Renders 570 People Homeless

There have been several conflict-related incidents in the Kuria East District since January 2013. The conflicts, which have been associated with cattle rustling, have impacted negatively on livelihood and political stability in the affected area, leaving 3 people injured and two dead. Following an attack on the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) E- Plus ambulances in the Refugee Camp by gunmen who shot at the vehicle several times on Monday 28th January 2013, thus injuring the paramedic on board, the KRCS will today Tuesday 29th January 2013, suspend its services in the Dadaab IFO2 East and West Refugee camps.
