Southern Africa: The Zambezi shows its might

GABORONE, 27 March 2009 (IRIN) - Rain continues to lash countries along the course of the upper Zambezi River, aggravating already extensive flooding in Angola, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia, where crops and infrastructure have been destroyed. In Namibia at least 90 lives have been lost and 350,000 people affected.

Namibia has launched an operation to rescue schoolchildren marooned by floodwaters at a boarding school in the country's northeastern Caprivi Strip.

NAMIBIA: Rocket attacks in Rundu
At least two 122 mm rockets fired from Angola on Sunday landed near the high-density residential area of Sauyemwa, just one km from the northern Namibian border town of Rundu, 'The Namibian' reported on Monday.

The newspaper said two other rockets, allegedly fired by Angolan UNITA rebels, hit an open space near a hut on the southern side of the Kehemu settlement on the outskirts of Rundu.
