Southern Africa: SADC meal planning

JOHANNESBURG, 22 August 2008 (IRIN) - The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has announced it will go ahead with plans to set up a regional grain reserve, while urging member states not to impose export restrictions on maize as the region grapples with high food prices.

Mauritius: Cyclone brings heavy rain

JOHANNESBURG, 22 January (IRIN) - The eye of tropical cyclone Dina was expected to miss Mauritius on Tuesday, but residents were advised to remain on full alert after torrential rains flooded homes on the island.
A statement from the Mauritius Meteorological Service was quoted in news reports as saying: "If you compare the position now to a few hours ago, we conclude that it is moving away ... But the storm has a large diameter and the cyclone winds are still influencing the island."

MAURITIUS: Premier concedes defeat
An opposition alliance on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius was set for a sweeping victory in the general election, according to early results cited in news reports. Although the final result was expected to be announced late on Tuesday, Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam conceded defeat.

"I recognise my party's defeat," he told reporters as the latest tally showed his alliance was being comprehensively beaten by an opposition coalition in the race for 62 seats in parliament.
