Mehdi, "My hands were hurting because the handcuffs were too tight"

Report
IRIN

ISLAM QALA, 27 February 2012 (IRIN) - In an attempt to find long-term solutions for the estimated 1.4 million unregistered Afghans living within its borders, Iran adopted a legalization scheme last year that paved the way for Afghans to enter Iran legally with work visas.

Observers say few Afghans have taken advantage of the new programme, and instead Afghan migrants continue streaming into Iran illegally every day in search of jobs. And every day, hundreds - including unaccompanied minors - are sent back to Afghanistan.

[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

AMMAN, 1 March 2007 (IRIN) - Iraqis fleeing their country's sectarian violence are finding it much harder to get into Jordan and Syria, after the authorities in these countries recently began implementing much stricter border controls.

Jordan and Syria have been the only of Iraq's neighbours to open their doors to the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis on the move. The United Nations Refugee Agency estimates that there are up to 700,000 Iraqi refugees in Jordan and from 500,000 to one million in Syria.

TEHRAN, 13 Jan 2006 (IRIN) - During 2005, Iran was on a rollercoaster ride of earthquakes, disasters, major political reshuffles and high-profile human rights cases. And all of this overshadowed by an escalating nuclear crisis and a new Islamic fundamentalist president.

TEHRAN, 27 October (IRIN) - The Japanese government has donated US $1.5 million to the office of the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Iran to help Afghan refugees.

The donation comes at a time when there has been a steady decline in donor contributions to UNHCR's Afghan repatriation programme, coupled with a cutback in UNHCR'S country budget for Iran.

HOUTKAN, 24 February (IRIN) - The earthquake that struck Iran's southeastern Kerman province early on Tuesday turned the mountain village of Houtkan into mud, killed many of its inhabitants and reduced the survivors to homelessness and destitution. The village was almost totally destroyed and, because it is so isolated, help has been slow to reach the stricken community.

BAM, 4 January (IRIN) - A year after an earthquake that killed at least 30,000 people in just seconds, and on the surface not much has changed. The mangled remains of a lost city are strewn across this once-fertile desert oasis. Debris, rubble and twisted metal girders are still piled high on every street and down every alley, almost untouched since the earthquake struck on 26 December 2003. Around them are date trees and a few half collapsed buildings stubbornly standing, precariously lopsided.
