Circumcision plans go awry in Swaziland

MBABANE, 13 May 2013 (IRIN) - It was an ambitious plan to circumcise the majority of men in Swaziland, an effort to reduce the risk of HIV transmission in a country with the world's highest HIV prevalence. How could it have gone wrong?

“First they told me that circumcision will not really protect me against HIV. Then they tell me that I cannot have sex for some weeks or months after circumcision. I told them ‘fusaki’ [get out]!” Eric Dlamini, a 22-year-old law student, told IRIN.

Shortages of new one-a-day ARV pills in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG, 19 April 2013 (IRIN) - Just days into the rollout of fixed-dose combination (FDC) antiretrovirals (ARVs) by South Africa's HIV treatment programme - the world's largest - activists are raising fears of drug shortages.

Patients on the triple-therapy regimen will be able to take just one pill daily to control the virus. This has the advantages of improving adherence, simplifying regimens so that prescribing errors are reduced, and enabling the introduction of community models of care.

Mining gets more than coal in Mozambique

TETE, 11 April 2013 (IRIN) - It is 15.45 in the afternoon and two young women are already sitting outside the Night Clinic in Moatize, a small town in Mozambique's northern Tete Province, near one of the largest coal mines in the southern hemisphere, owned by Brazilian mining giant, Vale. The national 123 road cuts through the town, and the clinic lies just off it, intentionally located to bring its services as close as possible to its target patients: miners, truck drivers and sex workers.

Swaziland's dental dilemma

MBABANE, 3 April 2013 (IRIN) - Having a toothache in Swaziland can be a lot more painful than it is in many other places. Most Swazis have never visited a dentist, because in a country where 70 percent of the population lives in absolute poverty, oral hygiene is considered a luxury.

Swaziland's 1.2 million people are served by only nine private dentists: five are in the capital, Mbabane, four are doing business in the central commercial hub, Manzini, and one is located in the up-scale Mbabane suburb of Ezulwini.

Boost for healthcare in DRC

NAIROBI, 31 March 2013 (IRIN) - The British government has announced a major new programme aimed at providing essential healthcare to six million people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The five-year, US$270.7 million project will focus on rebuilding health facilities, training health workers, and supplying drugs and equipment.

JOHANNESBOURG, 11 mars 2013 (IRIN) - L'épidémie de VIH/sida qui est arrivée en Afrique subsaharienne après plusieurs dizaines d'années de négligence a dangereusement affaibli les systèmes de santé, qui ont eu beaucoup de difficulté à gérer l'augmentation du nombre de patients. Puis, l'argent a commencé à affluer : le financement des programmes de lutte contre le VIH est passé de 5,5 pour cent de l'aide allouée à la santé en 1998 à près de 50 pour cent près de 10 ans plus tard.

Has HIV funding revived lagging health systems?

JOHANNESBURG, 6 March 2013 (IRIN) - The HIV/AIDS epidemic arrived in sub-Saharan Africa after decades of neglect had left healthcare systems dangerously weak, barely able to cope with the onslaught of patients. Then the money started pouring in - funding for HIV programmes rose from 5.5 percent of health aid in 1998 to nearly half of it almost 10 years later.

In Congo, few pygmy women have access to reproductive health services

BRAZZAVILLE, 1 March 2013 (IRIN) - Indigenous women in the Republic of Congo, better known as pygmies - a minority group threatened with extinction - are virtually excluded from reproductive health services. They mostly give birth at home and are exposed to related health risks, according to a 2012 study conducted by the Ministry of Health with support from the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).

HIV/AIDS fight hit by Global Fund cuts

Regional health clinics are facing shortages of ARV medicines

DAKAR/BISSAU, 12 December 2012 (IRIN) - One year after the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, reduced funding to the Guinea-Bissau government body in charge of coordinating HIV prevention and treatment activities, health centres outside the capital are facing medicine shortages, patients are not receiving the treatment they need, and the transport of patients to treatment centres has been cut.

Patients, support groups and health workers fear the fight against HIV is being hampered.

Health: Family planning - a sound economic investment

LONDON, 14 November 2012 (IRIN) - Family planning is a worthwhile investment that could reduce the cost of maternal and new-born health care by US$11.3 billion annually and provide much-needed support to some 222 million women globally who need contraceptives but do not have access to them, according to the UN Population Fund's (UNFPA) annual State of the World's Population report [ http://www.unfpa.org/webdav/site/global/shared/swp/2012/EN-SWP2012_Repor... ].

IMF recommends land reforms

JOHANNESBURG, 9 November 2012 (IRIN) - Land reform has been recommended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of the solution to deepening economic decline in Swaziland, a country where more than two-thirds of the population lives in poverty.

Following a two-week visit by a delegation, the IMF announced, in a 7 November statement, that one of the key challenges facing Swaziland - in addition to high unemployment, rising inequality and the world’s highest HIV/AIDS prevalence - is “improving access to modern financing by an appropriate land tenure reform.”

Push to meet 2013 male circumcision targets

KISUMU, 6 November 2012 (PLUSNEWS) - With just over one year left to achieve its target of having some 1.1 million men circumcised as part of HIV-prevention efforts, Kenya's government is ramping up efforts to bring more men into clinics, compensating them for their time and encouraging them to bring friends in for the procedure.
