Afghanistan: Waste management slipping out of control in Kabul

KABUL, 29 September 2008 (IRIN) - Population growth and the construction boom in Kabul over the past few years have resulted in the daily production of over 3,000 tonnes of solid waste. Some of this has been accumulating, causing serious health and environmental damage, according to Kabul Municipality.

The municipality reckons there is now a daily build-up of at least 300 tonnes of solid waste in and around Kabul city (109,500 tonnes annually).

"On our best working day we collect up to 90 percent of the solid waste from public locations in Kabul city,"

Afghanistan-Pakistan: Bajaur residents flee fighting

ISLAMABAD, 25 September 2008 (IRIN) - As fighting in Pakistan's northern areas intensifies, about 2,800 families from the tribal area of Bajaur are reported to have crossed into neighbouring Afghanistan.

Most are believed to be based in the Kunar province of Afghanistan, along Pakistan's western border.

AFP quoted Afghanistan's deputy refugees minister, Abdul Qader Ahadi, as confirming they had entered Afghanistan after "they escaped fighting between Pakistani Taliban and the security forces".

Afghanistan: Polio virus eradicated in north, virulent in south

KABUL, 24 September 2008 (IRIN) - The Ministry of Public Health has reported a virtual eradication of the polio virus in the relatively calm northern provinces and central highlands.

"In the past three years no polio case has been reported in 10 northern and central provinces," Abdullah Fahim, spokesman for the Public Health Ministry (MoPH), told IRIN.

The UN World Health Organization (WHO) sent a 14-member team to different parts of the country to do a rapid polio surveillance and assessment on 30 August.

KANDAHAR, 22 September 2008 (IRIN) - Zulaikha, 14, was the top student in her class last year but has been unable to attend school this year because of increased attacks on schools, rampant insecurity and threats to students and their families.

Afghanistan: 1.8 million children to be immunised against polio on Peace Day

KABUL, 18 September 2008 (IRIN) - The Ministry of Public Health, backed by the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO), is planning to immunise 1.8 million under-fives against polio between 21 and 23 September.

Health workers said the three days from International Peace Day on 21 September would enable them to access communities in the volatile south, where insurgency and counter-insurgency-related violence had increasingly impeded aid and public service delivery.

KABUL, 15 September 2008 (IRIN) - The International Rescue Committee (IRC) says it is still "reviewing and analysing" the security situation before deciding whether to resume activities in Afghanistan.

The IRC, an international NGO, suspended operations after four of its staff (three internationals and one national) were assassinated by armed men in Logar Province on 13 August.

Afghanistan: Ethnic antagonism spurs land disputes in north

KHOWAJA BAHAUDIN, 11 September 2008 (IRIN) - Hundreds of Pashtun refugees who have returned from Pakistan to Afghanistan's northeastern Takhar Province say their properties have been seized by local people and militias from other ethnic groups.

About 500 Pashtuns (Afghanistan's largest ethnic group) sheltering in dilapidated government buildings in the Khowaja Bahaudin District in Takhar said they left the area during the war against the Soviets in the 1980s.

On their return from Pakistan, the returnees claimed, they found their lands and houses seized, mostly by Uzbek militias

Afghanistan: Minister disputes call to boost refugee returns

KABUL, 8 September 2008 (IRIN) - The Afghan Minister of Refugees and Returnees, Shir Mohammad Etibari, has rejected calls by the head of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to boost the repatriation of Afghan refugees.

Antonio Guterres, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, was quoted as calling for more Afghan refugees to return home, particularly from Iran.

Afghanistan-Pakistan: Wheat loan to ease food shortage

KABUL, 4 September 2008 (IRIN) - The UN World Food Programme (WFP) and government of Pakistan are finalising an agreement involving the loan of 50,000 tonnes of wheat for pre-winter food aid operations in Afghanistan.

Once the agreement is signed, WFP will begin importing the wheat over two months, Susana Rico, WFP's country representative, said. It will be pre-positioned in vulnerable areas where access is difficult in winter.

The loan will help WFP to remedy immediate funding delays in emergency food aid for about five million Afghans hit by high food prices and drought.

Afghanistan: Flood abatement efforts yield mixed results

KABUL, 2 September 2008 (IRIN) - Government efforts to reduce flood risks and damage in vulnerable communities have yielded mixed results.

Flash floods killed about 400 people and destroyed hundreds of houses in different parts of the country in 2007, according to the Afghanistan National Disasters Management Authority (ANDMA).

In a bid to reduce the risks of seasonal floods in 2008, the Afghan government has spent about US$1.5million on thousands of gabion boxes.

Afghanistan: UN calls for "vital funding" to avert humanitarian crisis

KABUL, 1 September 2008 (IRIN) - The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) says donors must provide "vital funding" to enable aid agencies to avert a possible humanitarian crisis this winter.

UN agencies and the Afghan government on 9 July launched a joint appeal for US$404 million to mitigate the impact of high food prices and drought which have forced over five million people into "high risk" food insecurity, but so far donors have only pledged a small fraction of the requested funds, aid workers said.
