DAKAR, 31 May 2011 (IRIN) - Poor-performing donors were lambasted by UK Prime Minister David Cameron at this year's G8 leaders' meeting for failing to move towards meeting 0.7 percent [of gross national income] aid targets; but most major donors are to blame for tying aid to donor-based contractors, say aid watchdogs, and for reporting money spent at home as aid.

OPT: Educated, unemployed youth - a recipe for trouble

IRIN

JERUSALEM, 30 May 2011 (IRIN) - The lack of job opportunities for young people in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) has created an unemployment crisis that could further destabilize the Arab region, experts warn.

"The largest generation, which was born in the 1980s, has reached working age... young adults are now perceived as the most problematic age group," notes sociologist and demographer Philippe Fargues, also director of the Migration Policy Centre at the European University Institute in Florence.

Rains aggravate plight of displaced

Report
IRIN

NAIROBI, 27 May 2011 (IRIN) - Seasonal rains are among several factors to have exacerbated the crisis sparked by the sudden flight of tens of thousands of civilians from the disputed Sudanese region of Abyei, say aid workers, who point to both short- and long-term repercussions.

"Most of the roads in Southern Sudan are not passable during the rains and so that will make the movement of food difficult," World Food Programme (WFP) spokeswoman Amor Almagro told IRIN.
