Red Cross blankets save lives across northern India

Exceptionally cold conditions have swept across northern India over the last three weeks, taking the lives of hundreds of people, and causing suffering to thousands more. The cold wave is one of the most severe to hit India in decades, with Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana among those worst affected. Night temperatures regularly fell below 3 degrees Celsius in the capital, 4-5 degrees lower than the normal seasonal average. During the second week of the cold wave, Delhi recorded temperatures of 1.9 degrees, the lowest seen in 44 years.

Assam floods 2012

Following heavy monsoon rainfall, on 26 June 2012, flooding commenced across many districts in Assam which is situated in the northeast of India. Over the past two weeks, 124 people have lost their lives due to these floods including a large number of children. There is a report of sixteen people losing their lives in a landslide caused by heavy rain. At least 2.2 million people have been affected by this flooding. The torrential rains started early this monsoon season and the rains were exceptionally heavy this year.

Recovery of Hope- Indian Red Cross bridges distance

After a hard days work, when everybody gets into bed for rest and peaceful sleep Nithya Sadasivam kept awake worrying about the fate of her lost family. She had no clues, no information and no contact with her husband and daughter since they got separated in 2006 during the ongoing civil strife in Srilanka. She was left with the other two children, it was difficult for her to spend the rest of her life without the knowledge of the rest of her family.

India: victims of ethnic clashes struggle to overcome adversity

Joint news release (Indian Red Cross Society/ICRC) - Clashes that broke out during the first week of January between the Garo and Rabha communities in the north-eastern Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya caused the displacement of approximately 50,000 civilians and the deaths of at least 12 people.

In response to the violence, the Assam and Meghalaya branches of the Indian Red Cross Society today started distributing emergency goods acquired by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

India: WATSAN Unit becomes Operational

Dr. S.P. Agarwal, Secretary General paid a second visit to the devastated town of Leh on 16th - 17th of August to review the relief work being done by the Red Cross team consisting of staff and volunteers from Leh, Jammu & Kashmir State Branch, Srinagar and the National Headquarters. The Secretary General witnessed the rescue, search and transportation of dead and injured in which Red Cross teams are assisting local authorities.

India: Red Cross Relief to Leh

Indian Red Cross Society has responded to the cloud burst in Leh on 5th - 6th August, 2010 which has claimed 175 lives so far and left over 300 missing. Dr. S.P. Agarwal, Secretary General of the Indian Red Cross Society accompanied Chairman of the Society and Minister for Health & Family Welfare Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad to Leh the following day to assess the damage and the immediate needs of the affected people. They met senior officials of the State Government and offered support in the relief measures.

23.04.2010: New Delhi

It has been reported that up to 1 million people are living out in the open since the tornado ripped through impoverished villages in seven districts of Bihar on 13th of April which killed over 135 people. Tens of thousands of homes are flattened and the infrastructure of two of the worst affected districts, namely Araria and Pumia, has been badly damaged. Communication and power supplies are still being restored.

India: Uttar Dinajpur - A Rapid Emergency Needs Assessment

On the night of 13 April Tornado started in Forbesganj area of Bihar, hit Purnea and Araria districts in Bihar, and five blocks of Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal at 0.00 hrs of 14th April'2010. This killed 43 people and created massive devastation to the livelihoods of nearly a million population. Roughly the loss was estimated at 133 crores. There was no such forecasting or announcement from the meterological department. The wind speed was around 125 Km/ hrs. Out of nine blocks four were badly affected and one block was affected partly.

Indian Red Cross relief for AILA victims, 08 Jun 2009

According to media reports, turbulence triggered off by AILA resulted into the swelling of seawater that has entered many parts of Sundarban Islands. Atleast 87 points have been identified since June 6th 2009 due to full moon high tides. The high tide has also pushed up the river water level by about four feet above the normal level, submerging mangrove forests and inundating low-lying areas.

A large number of carcasses of domestic animals, poultry birds and innumerable roofs of thatched huts were seen floating in the tidewater.

Indian Red Cross relief for AILA victims

In West Bengal, the death toll in the devastating cyclonic storm that hit coastal districts in the State on 25th of May 2009 has gone up to 87. Sixteen have been killed following landslides in North Bengal. The storm-hit districts are Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Bankura, North 24 Parganas, Kolkata, Howarah and the worst-hit South 24 Parganas. Normal life has been disrupted in these areas as trees have been uprooted, houses damaged and roads are blocked. Many areas are without power and water.

India: Secretary General's message on World Health Day

On 26th Janauary 2001 Bhuj and surrounding areas were rocked by a devastating earthquake. The number of casualities started rising every hour. The only local hospital and the primary health centers in the area were badly damaged and the medical facilities came to a stand still. The Government airlifted medical teams but there were no equipped safe buildings where they could perform their duties. SITUATION

The Delhi government has evacuated people living on the banks of river Yamuna following Haryana releasing a record of 4 lakh cusecs of water to Delhi. River Yamuna crossed the danger mark on 22nd September and water level touched a high of 205.25 meter. Control room is working round the clock to monitor the levels and boats have been pressed in to evacuate affected people, who are being sheltered along roadside temporary camps.

"A large number of people had to rush out of flooded areas in Bihar. Many families are disintegrated. A number of cases of unaccompanied children have appeared in media.
