ICC Prosecutor marks Genocide Awareness Month

In 2010, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued its first warrant of arrest for genocide; a warrant which remains outstanding. Judges found that the evidence presented by the Prosecutor showed reasonable grounds to believe that Sudanese President Omar al Bashir is responsible for genocide by killing, causing serious bodily injury or mental harm and by deliberating inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of the Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa ethnic groups in Darfur.

Ntaganda case: Confirmation of charges hearing to start on 23 September 2013

Case: The Prosecutor v. Bosco Ntaganda

Today, Friday, 22 March 2013, Bosco Ntaganda, against whom the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued two arrest warrants, surrendered himself voluntarily and is now in the ICC’s custody. Bosco Ntaganda is currently escorted by an ICC delegation that has left Kigali (Rwanda) heading to the ICC detention centre in The Hague (Netherlands).

ICC welcomes Côte d’Ivoire as a new State Party

On 18 March 2013, the International Criminal Court (ICC) held a ceremony to welcome Côte d’Ivoire as the 122nd State Party to the Rome Statute – the Court’s founding treaty. The Statute will enter into force for Côte d’Ivoire on 1 May 2013.
In a symbolic act held at the seat of the Court, the ICC President, Judge Sang-Hyun Song, congratulated the Ambassador of Côte d’Ivoire, H.E. Mr Sallah Ben Abdelkader Hamza, and presented him with a special edition of the Rome Statute.

Le 18 mars 2013, la Cour pénale internationale (CPI) a tenu une cérémonie afin de célébrer l’admission de la Côte d’Ivoire en tant que 122e État partie au Statut de Rome – le traité fondateur de la CPI. Le Statut entrera en vigueur dans ce pays le 1er mai 2013.

Statement by ICC Prosecutor concerning Mali

My Office is aware of reports that Malian forces may have committed abuses in recent days, in central Mali. I urge the Malian authorities to put an immediate stop to the alleged abuses and on the basis of the principle of complementarity, to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the alleged crimes. I remind all parties to the on-going conflict in Mali that my Office has jurisdiction over all serious crimes committed within the territory of Mali, from January 2012 onwards. All those alleged to be responsible for serious crimes in Mali must be held accountable.

Today, ICC judges decided to unseal their Arrest Warrant against Mrs. Simone Gbagbo for her alleged individual responsibility for crimes against humanity during Côte d’Ivoire’s post-election crisis in 2010 - 2011.

Since the opening of investigations, Côte d’Ivoire has been cooperating fully with the OTP in its investigations. We expect the Ivoirian authorities to continue cooperating and to surrender Simone Gbagbo to the Court.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Media

Thank you for being here for this early afternoon briefing. I wanted to start the programme of this my first official visit to Kenya as ICC Prosecutor by meeting with you and introducing myself. Let me also briefly outline for you why I am here and what I intend to do. Then I will be pleased to answer a few questions from the floor.
