TC Donna passed 50-100km north of the Torres islands in Torba Province as a category 3 cyclone on the 4th & 5th of May 2017. Destructive winds and heavy rain caused significant damage. This graphic summarises the Governmentof Vanuatu’s response. Many partner agencies supported the response.

Event Overview

Tropical Cyclone Donna moved in a westerly direction passing north of the Vanuatu group within 50-100km the Torres islands in Torba Province as a Category 3 system.

The system continued west, before turning south, gathering strength to become a Category 5 cyclone and passed to the west of Sanma, Malmpa and Shefa. Tropical Cyclone Donna passed about 200km to the west of the islands of Vanuatu.

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) issued the all clear on Tuesday 9 th May 2017.

Current Situation

  • NDMO has been working closely with Area Council Secretaries and partners to ensure affected communities are being supported.

  • NEOC has remained operational to co-ordinate the response.

  • Agencies who are deploying personnel and/or supplies need to advise the NEOC.

  • Damage assessment completed for Torres, yet to be completed for Santo.

  • NDMO is also reviewing damage assessments from Tropical Cyclone Cook.
