Relief for affected Marabella residents

The Ministry of the People and Social Development has distributed approximately $3 million in relief to residents of Diego Martin who were affected by inclement weather in Diego Martin and environs.

Minister of the People and Social Development, Dr Glenn Ramadarsingh announced during a visit to the “Train Line”, Bayshore, Marabella to bring relief to residents who were also affected by inclement weather on the weekend.

“We must as a people and a caring Government respond to the needs of all citizens regardless of whom or where you are,” Ramadharsingh said.

Housing Ministry distribute $1.8 million in cheques to flood affected persons

The Ministry of Housing, Lands and Marine Affairs has distributed $1.8 million in grants to those who were affected by floods in early August.

In a process that would usually take up to six months, Government was able to expedite and distribute cheques to at least 100 families from the Diego Martin, Maraval, Carenage and Laventille.

The residents were presented with cheques which ranged from $7,000 to up to $30,000.

Young Children most at risk to Dengue; Government on clean-up campaign

The Minister of Health has warned that young children are most at risk to the present strain of Dengue in Trinidad and Tobago which has been present for the last 30 years in the country.

He was Speaking at a joint press conference with Minister of Local Government Chandresh Sharma and other officials from various agencies at the Ministry of Local Government, Kent House, Maraval, as Government announced its plans to fight the deadly fever.

Dry River being dredged to alleviate flooding

July 12, 2011: Minister of Works, Jack Warner, assured on Monday that flooding in Port of Spain will be reduced as a result as a $1 million being spent to rent state-of-the-art machinery—an amphibious excavator—to dredge the Dry River.

Warner, Minister in the Ministry of Works Stacy Roopnarine and Permanent Secretary Cheryl Blackman, together with technical staff from the Ministry, toured Sea Lots to view first-hand the commencement of the dredging works.

This project which is in collaboration with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) with the support of the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) also aims to enhance the mechanisms for notification and dissemination

USA: T&T donates US$ 500,000 for Katrina victims

Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Port of Spain, October 14, 2005. A handing over ceremony was held on Wednesday October 12, 2005 at the Trinidad and Tobago Embassy in Washington D.C. where Ambassador Marina Valère presented a US$500,000.00 cheque to Dr Emmett Carson, Chief Executive Officer of the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation, to support relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Dr Carson expressed heartfelt appreciation for the solidarity and substantial support demonstrated by Trinidad and Tobago to the plight of Louisiana.

Trinidad and Tobago: ODPM responds to compensation for Caroni villagers

Recently the media has been highlighting calls for compensation by Caroni Villagers for damages caused by flooding in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Emily.

The media coverage focused on the Villagers' claims of lack of support by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) formerly NEMA, towards the residents of Caroni.

The ODPM wishes to inform the media of the following facts regarding this situation:

The ODPM is a coordinating agency and relies on its supporting agencies to provide the response mechanism from which relief can be assessed.

Trinidad and Tobago: Emergency task force stand down OPS

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) formerly NEMA stood down its Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) today after it met for the last time this morning.
The EOC was activated when it was determined that Tropical Storm Emily was approaching Trinidad and Tobago and emergency mechanisms had to be alerted for appropriate action.

At the meeting, which was chaired by the Pro Tem Director, ODPM, Dr Myron Chin, members of the Task Force gave a status of operations in areas that were affected by the passing of Tropical Storm Emily.
