  • Staple grain prices continued to vary across most markets in Sudan between January and February 2013 due to increased supply, high demand, insecurity and an adverse macro-economic environment.

  • On average, sorghum prices were about 30 percent higher than the same period last year and 141 percent higher than the deflated fiveyear average (2008-2012).

Sudan Returns and Early Reintegration Sector Fact Sheet [EN/AR]

Over 40,000 people of South Sudanese origin are stranded at departure points in and around Khartoum, often living in very poor conditions.

WHAT?

• An estimated 40,000 people of South Sudanese origin are living in open areas in and around Khartoum, waiting to travel to South Sudan. Many have been there for more than two years and are living in poor conditions.

• A further 3,500 people of South Sudanese origin are in a similar position living at Kosti railway station and have had no or little access to basic services for two years.

Global acute malnutrition (GAM) levels for children under-five in Sudan stand at 16.4%, which is above the internationally accepted emergency “critical” threshold of 15%.

WHAT?

• Over 750,000 children are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition in 2013. Currently less than 15% of these children have access to treatment.

• One in three children in Sudan is stunted; over 2 million children are unlikely to ever reach their full potential in terms of physical and intellectual development.

Sudan Non Food Items and Emergency Shelter Fact Sheet [EN/AR]

An estimated 2 million people in Darfur and a further 300,000 in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states live without adequate durable shelter.

WHAT?

• 75% of people in need of non-food items and emergency shelter are women and children.

• In Darfur, it is estimated that 35,000 conflict & disaster affected households will require non-food items and emergency shelter assistance in 2013 as well as a further 25,000 returnee households.

• 50,000 long-term IDP households in Darfur require renewal of NFIs in 2013.

Sudan Mine Action Sector Fact Sheet [EN/AR]

In 2012, mines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) killed or injured more than 100 people in Sudan.

WHAT?

• More than 1.4 million people are affected by mines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) in the areas of South Kordofan, Blue Nile, Darfur and east Sudan, with 31 fatalities and 72 injured in 2012 - mainly men and boys.

• Increase in mine and ERW affected areas, with 28 new hazardous areas registered in 2012 and over 288 open for survey and clearance, often in areas with limited access for assessment.

Sudan Logistics and Emergency Telecommunications Sector [EN/AR]

In 2013, humanitarian assistance will be provided to over four and a half million people in Sudan, often in rural areas with very poor infrastructure.

WHAT?

• In responding to the needs of people in Sudan, humanitarian organisations need to transport and store large quantities of relief supplies.

• An estimated 37,000 humanitarian and development professionals from 140 organisations require transportation to over 60 destinations in Sudan in support of their work.

5.75 million people in Sudan are in need of basic health services.

The number of health personnel in Darfur is five times lower than the WHO benchmark.

WHAT?

• Inadequate and insufficient access to primary health care and referral services for 5.75 million IDPs, returnees, refugees and people from affected host communities in Darfur, South Kordofan, Blue Nile and Abyei and east Sudan.

• High morbidity and mortality from communicable and vaccine-preventable diseases, particularly in conflict-affected regions.

In Sudan, over 1.8 million children aged 6-13 years old are out of school.

WHAT?

• Over 1.8 million school age children (56% of them girls) between six and thirteen years of age in Sudan are out of school.

• More than 165,000 children have had their education disrupted due to conflict in Blue Nile, South Kordofan and Abyei.

• 79.6% of nomadic children are out of school and need special education that responds to their mobile lifestyle.

With 4.3 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, Sudan remains one of the largest humanitarian operations, requiring a large-scale, coordinated response.

WHAT?

• Coordination and common services are required for a large and complex humanitarian operation involving multiple humanitarian actors. This includes 22 Government line ministries and departments, some 3,800 national NGOs, 125 INGOs, the Red Cross / Crescent Movement and 26 UN organisations, all of whom require coordination and common services.

Monthly Market Update Bulletin # 61 Feb 2013

SUMMARY:

  • By January 2013 cereal prices were either stable or increased in some markets due to high demand, replenishment of stocks by traders, imminent export to neighboring countries and expected bulk purchase by the Strategic Reserve Corporation.

  • Current average wholesale sorghum prices were about 153 percent higher than the five-year average and 27 percent higher than the same period last year.

Monthly Market Update Bulletin # 60 Jan 2013

SUMMARY:

  • Grain prices continued a seasonal downward trend during December 2012 in most markets of Sudan. However, prices are still comparatively high despite the good harvest prospect of 2012/13’s agricultural season in Sudan due to the high cost of production and transportation caused by high inflation/local currency devaluation.

  • Onn average wholesale sorghum prices in December were relatively similar to November, and 140 percent higher the five-year average and 21 percent higher than the same period last year.

This quarterly bulletin provides information on price changes for the most commonly consumed staples and their potential impacts on the cost of the food basket and is a compliment to the Monthly Market Update produced by FAO/SIFSIA/Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries.

Highlights:

  • The country is enjoying an above five year average harvest. However, sorghum prices remain high, especially when compared to same time last year prices.
