- The European Commissioner Mr. Johannes Hahn will visit the Autonomous Region of Madeira on the 6th and 7th of March to get acquainted with the finance needs to restore Madeira Island.

- Today, 28th of February there is going be a show called "A flower to Madeira", organized by SIC (private Portuguese television channel) and "Coliseu dos Recreios", with the patronage of His Excellency the President of Portuguese Republic and the participation of various Portuguese artists, in order to raise funds for Madeira victims.

Water Supply: The situation maintains the same as reported before, however the situation in Funchal Harbour will be normalized today.

Electricity: Electricity is being established all over the Island, except in Meia Légua (Ribeira Brava) and some small areas in Funchal.

Public Services: The Public Services are operating with minimum services.

Portugal sends a C130 with a multidisciplinary team to Haiti

As a first step in the Portuguese Government's humanitarian assistance, a Portuguese Air Force C130 is expected to leave Lisbon today, January 15, bound for Port-au-Prince, carrying a multidisciplinary team to assist in the relocation and provision of medical care and medicine to the Haitian earthquake victims of last Tuesday.

The Portuguese Government sends new medical team to help Cape Verde tackle dengue fever epidemic

The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have decided to extend the Portuguese aid in response to the dengue fever outbreak in Cape Verde, by sending a second medical assistance team November 17, to relieve the first team of four doctors and four nurses in the country since November 7, who will now return home.

This second team consists of two internal medicine doctors and three nurses from the same Coimbra University Hospitals (HUC) Intensive Care unit as the first team. Headed by HUC Infectious Diseases

Portuguese Government help Cape Verde tackle dengue fever epidemic

The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will send a health care team to Cape Verde, following the appeal for international assistance the Cape Verdian Government launched yesterday in response to the outbreak of dengue fever in the country.

This team of four doctors and four nurses from the Coimbra University Hospitals, and headed by specialist in Emergency and Intensive Care Dr. Joao Paulo Almeida e Sousa will leave next Saturday evening for Praia, where it will join Professor Kamal Mansinho, a specialist in Infectious Diseases already in Cape Verde.

OPT: Government Communiqué on the situation in Gaza, 2 Mar 2009

The Portuguese Government reiterates its deep concern with the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and appeals for the establishment of an immediate cease-fire and for the withdraw of Israel troops from Gaza, in compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 1860.

The Portuguese Government once again prompts Israel to ensure the necessary security conditions enabling regular distribution of humanitarian aid, including medical assistance to the victims and to the general population.

Portugal helps law enforcement in East Timor

Portugal is sending a 120-strong gendarmerie force to Timor-Leste (East-Timor), announced Portuguese Prime Minister José Sócrates. The Government took the decision on May 25th following an appeal from East Timor authorities, diplomatic contacts in the UN and with third countries and a statement by the President of the UN Security Council on the same day. The UN General Secretary Kofi Annan called Prime Minister José Sócrates to tell him that the UN fully backed Portugal's willingness to help East Timor. Portuguese Humanitarian Aid to Mozambique

Given the calamity situation in Mozambique, the Portuguese Government has determined that the National Service for Civil Protection (SNPC) shall carry out a Humanitarian Aid Operation, to mitigate the consequences of the floods that occurred in Mozambique in the last 15 days.

More Portuguese help for earthquake relief effort

Attending the needs of Turkish authorities, the Government of Portugal is sending 12 tones of emergency aid (tents, blankets, body bags, medical supplies) in next 24 hours.

Earlier this week (August 19th), Portugal sent a Portuguese Air Force Hercules/C-130 aircraft with Search and Rescue (SAR) teams, including 6 SAR dog teams, and 2 Medical teams (total of 47 people) to the Republic of Turkey.

These teams are working in Adaparazi, a town near Izmit.

Both operations are co-ordinated by the Portuguese National Service for Civil Protection.

Portugese search and rescue teams join earthquake relief effort

On August 18, the Government of Portugal decided to dispatch Search and Rescue (SAR) and Medical teams (total of 47 people) to the Republic of Turkey, which was attacked by a major earthquake.

The composition of the teams are as follows:

Team leader - Manuel Velloso (Head of the Planning and Operations Department of the National Service for Civil Protection - SNPC)

Support to team leader (3 SNPC officers)

2 SAR teams (26 fire fighters fully equipped)

2 Medical teams (2 doctors and 2 nurses)

6 SAR dog teams (7 police officers and 6 rescue dogs)

1 Logistic team (4 people)

Agreement between the Republic of Indonesia and the Portugese Republic on the Question of East Timor

The Governments of Indonesia and Portugal,

Recalling General Assembly resolutions 1514 (XV), 1541(XV), 2625(XXV) and the relevant resolutions and decisions adopted by the Security Council and the General Assembly on the question of East Timor;

Bearing in mind the sustained efforts of the Governments of Indonesia and Portugal since July 1983, through the good offices of the Secretary-General, to find a just, comprehensive and internationally acceptable solution to the question of East Timor;
