2.PROGNOSIS:

The Hydrometrological Services predicted partly cloudy conditions with cloudy spells and showers over some coastal and inland locations. Rainfall is expected to be between 0.0mm and 10.0mm today, May 14, 2012.

The Hydrometrological Services predicted generally cloudy to overcast conditions and occasional showers can be expected over all the regions in Guyana. Isolated thunderstorm can be expected over some coastal and near inland areas (regions 2 to 6 and 10). Flash floods can be expected in flood prone areas of regions 2 to 6 and 10 as a result of the heavy rainfall. Rainfall is expected to be between 0.1mm and 30.0mm today, May 08, 2012.

SUBJECT: Flooding in several regions in Guyana.

EVENTS: As the La Nina weather conditions persist over Guyana, several communities particularly in Georgetown and the coastland of Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, were under several inches of water as a result of continuous rainfall over a 24 hours period. According to the Hydromet Department, the rainfall recorded in Georgetown over the last 24 hours was 129mm which exceeded the total amount of rainfall for most locations in the country for the entire month of February.

Agriculture Ministry undertaking damage assessment

-to aid farmers who were affected by recent flooding

Georgetown, GINA, February 28, 2012

Minister of Agriculture Dr. Leslie Ramsammy has indicated that the Ministry has committed to assisting farmers who were recently affected by flooding brought on La Nina conditions, and while a damage assessment of the areas has commenced, Government cannot compensate farmers for all their losses. Relief will be provided in the form of fertilizer, seeds, seedlings and chemicals.

EVENTS:

The heavy rainfall which commenced on January 28, 2012, resulted in flooding in several communities in Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, particularly, those communities located on the Coastal Plain and along the Abary, Mahaica, Mahaicony Rivers, Pomeroon, Black Bush Polder and Canal Polders. Some of the affected communities were inundated for a second time as a result of heavy to moderate rainfall experienced from Sunday February 19, 2012 to present.

Most flood affected areas return to normalcy

There has been a record reduction in the levels of rainfall experienced recently, and the regions affected by flood have to date returned to normalcy.

Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon at a post - Cabinet media briefing today said that while there has been damage to livestock, cash crop and rice farming; activities primarily in the farming communities have resumed.

Region 5 - MAHAICA-BERBICE

The Regional Chairman reported that the water continues to recedes rapidly from the communities along the Branch Road up to the No. 10 Village, however from Esau and Jacob and the communities further down the Mahaicony River the water is receding very slowly. Additionally, the water is receding very slowing from the residential areas and farmlands of the Upper Mahaica Communities including Little and Big Baiboos and Grass Hook. The Regional Chairman reported that the Abary Creek affected residents still under flood water.
