Finland grants EUR 39.8 million in humanitarian assistance for the world’s crises

By decision taken by Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala on 15 March, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs has granted its humanitarian assistance funds for the first part of the year, totalling EUR 39.8 million, to people suffering from the world’s crises. This time, Finland targets humanitarian assistance to Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Earlier this year, EUR 3.5 million was already granted for the acute needs of the Syrian crisis.

Finland grants 9.5 million euros in humanitarian assistance for the world’s crises

By decision of Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs has granted its humanitarian assistance funds for the last part of the year, totalling 9.46 million euros, to people suffering from the world’s crises. The humanitarian assistance granted by Finland in 2012 thus rises in total to more than 83 million euros. In the distribution of funds this autumn, the humanitarian assistance targets Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Director of External Relations for the UN’s Palestinian relief agency to visit Finland

Salvatore Lombardo, Director of External Relations for UNRWA, will visit Finland on Thursday, 11 October 2012. During his visit he will meet with cooperation partners of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs as well as parties interested in Palestine.

Originally from Italy, Lombardo has worked in the humanitarian aid sector for over 25 years. He has a long background in the UN refugee agency UNHCR, and in UNRWA he served as Director of UNRWA Affairs in Lebanon before taking up his current position.

Finnish product improves women’s and girls’ access to birth control in developing countries

An international initiative was announced on Wednesday 26 September in New York to expand access to long-lasting and reliable birth control to 27 million women in developing countries.

”The initiative improves access to contraceptives and therefore provides options for women and girls. Safe contraceptive methods reduce maternal mortality and morbidity, and empower women to decide on their own body,” Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala says.

Finland grants additional humanitarian aid for the Syrian crisis

By decision of Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala, Finland grants 1.5 million euros of humanitarian assistance to those suffering from the crisis in Syria. The support will be targeted for persons in need of assistance, both those within Syria as well those who have fled to neighbouring countries. It will be channelled through the Finnish Red Cross, the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund.

In Nepal, the introduction of running water and proper toilets has meant less disease and illness among the people. In addition, because water no longer has to be carried home from far away, there are more hours that can be used for going to school, taking care of the home, and making more varied and nutritious meals. There is also time for new work that provides a source of income.

Kimmo Kiljunen, the Foreign Minister’s Special Representative to regional peace-mediation tasks, visited Myanmar and Thailand just before Easter. Finland grants humanitarian aid to the victims of the earthquake in Turkey

By a decision made by Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs will target EUR 500,000 of emergency aid to those suffering from the consequences of the earthquake in Turkey.

As a result of the earthquake that hit the province of Van on 23 October more than 2,200 buildings were destroyed and tens of thousands of people were left homeless. As the weather is getting colder, Turkey is in dire need of tents suited for winter use.

Finland will grant EUR 23.6 million in humanitarian aid

The Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs will allocate EUR 23.6 million of emergency aid by the end of this year. The new decisions made by Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala will raise Finland’s total humanitarian contribution to more than EUR 90 million in 2011. Alongside the alleviation of acute distress situations, Finland lays emphasis on finding long-term solutions.
