Food Security and Nutrition Quarterly Bulletin, October - December 2012

HIGHLIGHTS

• Heavy rainfall in September and October caused flash floods in 8 provinces, resulting in 27 deaths and 4,057 displaced households.

• From October to December 2012, the average rainfall level was lower than the historical average and the same period in 2011.

• Wet season rice production in 2012 was 6.85% higher than in 2011; Cultivated area of dry season rice in this quarter was above 100% of the planned figure; On a year-on-year basis, production of maize during the wet season increased by 19%, cassava decreased by 10% and mung bean decreased by 13%.

Severe form of Hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD) was the cause of illnesses and deaths in majority of the cases recently reported to the Ministry of Health in Cambodia, concluded the findings of a joint investigation.

Update on investigation of the unknown disease in Cambodia

9 JULY 2012 - As part of the continuing investigations into the undiagnosed illness, the Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Cambodia is finalizing the review of all suspected hospitalised cases. This final review added an additional two cases between April to 5 July 2012, making the total number of children affected to be 59. Of these, 52 have died.

The age of the cases range from three months to 11 years old, with the majority being under three years old. The overall male: female ratio is 1.3:1.

On September 29, 2009 at 9:00 am Local Cambodia Time (LCT), at the latitude from 0o N to 40o N and the longitude from 85o E to 140o E, the rather intense monsoon trough lies across Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Lao PDR, Cambodia and Viet Nam. It is connected with the Typhoon "KETSANA" (0916), with its central pressure 970 hPa, located at latitude 16o0 N, longitude 110o2 E, over Viet Nam. The Typhoon is moving to West with its speed 15 km/h and maximum wind speed 130 km/h in the centre of TY. The TY trough lies across Lao PDR, Cambodia and Thailand.
