Emergency Food and Non-Food Requirements and Response 2009

1. Requirement

In January 2009, the Ethiopian Government with its humanitarian partners identified a total of 4.9 million beneficiaries that require emergency assistance in the year through the joint needs assessment conducted in November/December 2008. This joint approach shows the Government's commitment to make the procedure transparent.

Accordingly to the officially launched Humanitarian Requirements document, a total of 591,503MT of food is required

Survey Methodology: During the fourth quarter (Sept-Dec 2008) a total of 16 surveys were conducted in Ethiopia SNNPR (9), Oromia (1) and Amhara (5) using the SMART methodology. Three of them were triggered by emergency situation and the remaining were either monitoring or end line surveys. Survey Methodology: Between July and September 2008, seven surveys were conducted in SNNPR, Oromia and Afar Regions using the SMART methodology. Prior to implementation, all survey proposals were technically reviewed and approved by ENCU as part of efforts to standardize and quality control.

Sample sizes for the under-five study population ranged from 505 in Sidama zone (SNNPR) to 777 in West Hararghe

Early warning information from the DPPA/B and reports from health bureaus in affected woredas raised at federal and regional task force meetings resulted in some 24 full emergency nutrition surveys being conducted jointly by NGOs with support of the Ministry of Health, DPPB/FS office and regional ENCU (RENCU) in five regions.

Nutritional Surveys Conducted

A total of 16 nutrition surveys were conducted by SCUK, GOAL, ACF, WV-Ethiopia, SCUSA, RENCU/DPPB in SNNP, Afar, Somali and Tigray regions between late March and early June 2007. Committee Decides Over 8.2 Million Birr to be apportioned to Flood-Displaced People Rehabilitation activities

Silti Woreda

A 23 by 33 cluster nutrition survey using the SMART methodology was conducted by GOAL in Silti woreda in March 2007 to serve as an end line evaluation of its CTC programme that had been implemented for eight months and handed over to the woreda health sector in January 2007. A total of 763 children aged 6-59 months were surveyed. Retrospective mortality information was collected from 2690 individuals using 90 days recall period. The Data were analysed using Nutrisurvey SMART software.

Kalu and Dessie Zuria Woredas

Two nutrition surveys were conducted in Kalu and Dessie Zuria in January as part of the regular monitoring of Concern project areas. The SMART method was used for the planning phase, resulting in sampling 38 clusters of 23 children in Kalu and 31 clusters of 23 children in Dessie Zuria.

Ethiopia: Over birr 2.6 million assistance obtained for flood victims

In support of flood victims Birr 2,675,146 was obtained from different religious institutions and two private companies.

The donations were handed over to the DPPA through the representatives of the respective donor institutions and companies in ceremonies held at the Agency's Hall.
