CWS helps meet ongoing needs of Joplin tornado survivors

Church World Service, a global humanitarian organization, has awarded a grant of $5,000 to the Joplin Long-Term Recovery Committee to assist in meeting the needs of tornado survivors.

The Joplin Long Term Recovery Committee is a collaborative group of more than 30 nonprofit and faith-based organizations working to help people affected by the May 22, 2011, tornado in Joplin, Mo. The group provides case management, housing repair and construction and emotional and spiritual care to survivors.

Breaking Ground for Housing in Thatta

In a needs assessment conducted by CWS-P/A, the district of Thatta exhibited signs of being highly prone to various types of disasters. Recognizing the huge loss to housing during the 2010 floods, the organization initiated a housing project to support 500 flood affected families.

NGOs call for investigation over violence in Papua

A group of New Zealand human rights, development and peace organisations is calling for the Indonesian government to investigate allegations of excessive force and human rights violations by Indonesian security forces in Papua last month.

The group is also calling for an immediate dialogue between the Government of Indonesia and Papuan leaders to address issues that underpin conflict in Papua, and has asked the New Zealand government to do all it can to encourage such dialogue.

Haiti earthquake

In the wake of a powerful earthquake centered just southwest of the capital city of Port-au-Prince, Church World Service staff are quickly responding, contacting long-term partners in the country and working with them to assess the situation. The Ecumenical Foundation for Peace, whose House of Hope day school is supported by CWS, reports the school is damaged and they are trying to determine the well-being of some of the staff and children.

Emergency appeal for the Solomon Islands

Christian World Service (CWS) today launched an emergency appeal to support the people of the Solomon Islands in response to the severe earthquake and resulting tsunami that struck part of the islands on 2nd April.

The most severely affected areas are Choiseul and Western Provinces. While reports are still sketchy, in both places there has been widespread property damage and loss of life.

Ruth Liloqula from CWS's partner, the Lauru Land Conference based in Choiseul, has reported that two metre high waves travelled up to 200 metres inland, causing major property destruction
