March 24, 2012 - As an initial response to this week’s coup d’état in Mali, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, today announced that Canada is suspending aid programs involving direct payments to the government of Mali, effective immediately.

“Canada utterly condemns this attack on democracy by a faction of Mali’s military,” said Baird. “We call on those behind this coup to immediately withdraw so that constitutional order, peace and stability may be restored.”

Canadian humanitarian aid to help Syrians March 12, 2012

Ottawa, Ontario―Today, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, announced Canada is supporting needed emergency humanitarian assistance in Syria.

Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency, is providing immediate support to help provide access to emergency food assistance, safe water, sanitation facilities, essential household items, and other much-needed assistance to the victims of violence.

Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, and the Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment, launched the Canada Fund for African Climate Resilience.

"Canada is continuing to help the people of the Philippines, who are still in need of emergency humanitarian assistance due to the affects of Tropical Storm Washi and resulting flash floods," said Minister Oda. "The situation remains critical and Canada is committed to helping our friends in the Philippines."

The January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti is a salient reminder of the fragility of life and how years of development work and progress can be wiped out in an instant.

Two years after the earthquake, Canada has shown to the people of Haiti―and the world―that we are there to support the millions of people whose lives were impacted by this tragic event. Canada has delivered humanitarian assistance, helped to rebuild institutions and infrastructure, and supported sustainable development based on the Haitian government's priorities.
