Refugee numbers soaring as violence continues

Seasonal rains due in Sudan and South Sudan will exacerbate already dire conditions in refugee camps, restrict travel and access, and heighten the risk of disease, a group of leading humanitarian agencies warned today. The rains, which in some places have already started, will make many roads impassable, trapping people in unstable areas and deepening the current hunger crisis.

Overconsumption, Not Population, Is Key To Global Environment Crisis

Renewed military action against the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) risks triggering further devastation for local people in DR of Congo, Central African Republic, and South Sudan unless more is done to protect civilians and prevent retaliations by one of Africa’s most brutal rebel groups, ten local organisations and international agencies said today.

Pesticide misuse a major threat to farmers’ health and food

April 16 2012 - With World Malaria Day on April 25 the unique role the Church is playing in tackling the disease in sub-Saharan Africa has been highlighted.

It is well known that mosquito nets and access to treatment save lives but the central role of the Church is sometimes overlooked.

The question of 'what changes do we need to empower women smallholders and achieve food security?' has been asked repeatedly. But transformational changes in both public policy and practice have been few and far between, although increasing access to resources and opportunities for women farmers could substantially reduce the number of hungry people in the world.

In September 2011, Cambodia experienced its worst flooding in more than a decade. Over 1.7 million people were affected; about 50,000 households were forced to flee the rising waters and 247 people lost their lives.

The flooding also contaminated safe drinking water supplies, leaving families at high risk of severe diarrhoea and other diseases. Simultaneously, in many areas health centres were flooded, exacerbating the spread of disease.

The tide of water also destroyed the rice crops of many small-scale and subsistence farmers, who rely on their fields for survival.

A perfect storm of failed rains, widespread drought, spiraling cereal prices, migrant unemployment, and mass population displacement due to regional conflict, has left close to 13 million men, women and children in the Sahel facing acute hunger and severe malnutrition over the coming months.

Changing climate, changing disasters: pathways to integration (and accompanying policy brief) is an essential step-by-step guide for more joined-up thinking and action in disaster risk management, especially for sudden and slow-onset disasters exacerbated by climate change. It supports disaster risk practitioners to:

  • connect with colleagues in development and climate change adaptation by creating a shared ‘language’ of resilience

  • assess existing (or develop new) organisations, policies or programmes and build partner networks to fill capacity gaps
