The Barbados Red Cross Society Responds to Barbadians' Humanitarian Needs

The Barbados Red Cross Society (BRCS) has launched "Operation Breadfruit" the key component of its response to the humanitarian needs of Barbadians affected by the damage done by Tropical Storm Tomas.

"Operation Breadfruit" is being coordinated through the office of the Director-General by Lawrence Marshall, the BRCS Director of Disaster Services. As of Wednesday, the dozen or so volunteers have distributed at least one hundred (100) tarpaulins to Barbadians whose house roofs were damaged by the heavy rain and gusty winds associated with the tropical storm.

Caribbean Red Cross societies step up response to H1N1

In response to the H1N1 pandemic, Red Cross societies around the Caribbean are supporting their statutory health care systems in preparing communities to respond to H1N1. Thanks to funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Red Cross staff and volunteers have been working directly with community members to share information on how to reduce the transmission of the virus.

Red Cross ready for 2009 hurricane season

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies (IFRC) is encouraging the people of the Caribbean to become 'Red Cross ready' for the 2009 hurricane season which officially starts today, June 1st and ends on November 30th.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasters say the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be near-normal. However, the IFRC is advising the public to prepare for the possibility of being hit by a storm.

Belize Red Cross responds after earthquake

The most recent earthquake to hit Belize and Honduras on May 28th has been an eye opener. The Belize Red Cross has been busy disseminating information on disasters such as hurricanes and floods to vulnerable communities. However, when this new hazard hit, it was found that the population was not aware of what to do and while earthquakes don't give advance warnings, it is important to know what to do when the earth shakes or when a tsunami watch is declared.

The Belize Red Cross has been on alert and its southern branches have carried out assessments in the Toledo District.

Jamaica Red Cross, UNFPA address hygiene needs after Gustav

After a hurricane or storm, the most obvious needs always emerge...almost always that is.

For those who were affected by Tropical Storm Gustav which impacted the island of Jamaica on August 28-29, 2008, their needs were clear. Many persons, particularly those in the worst affected parishes of Portland, St. Mary, St. Catherine, Kingston & St. Andrew and St. Thomas, needed food, water and shelter.

Sudan: TTRC and ADRA team up to help flooded communities

The Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross (TTRC) together with the Adventist Disaster Relief Agency (ADRA) recently assisted persons in the community of El Dorado who were severely affected by the flooding which took place over the weekend of September 7.

The TTRC, represented by acting director general, Angela Gouveia and other members, teamed up with representatives of ADRA to distribute relief items to persons along the Eastern Main Road, where flood waters entered homes and caused significant damage.

Hurricane Ike causes mass destruction in Caribbean

Hurricane Ike tore through the Caribbean on Sunday leaving behind mass devastation as the region tries recovery from storms Gustav and Hanna which has already caused severe death and destruction.

Ike, a powerful category four storm barreled through the Turks and Caicos islands with fierce winds and trains and tore roofs of homes and caused serious infrastructural damage. Jamaica Red Cross responds to Gustav

The Jamaica Red Cross (JRC) is playing its part in the national response to Tropical Storm Gustav which impacted the island on Thursday August 28 and Friday August 29, 2008.

The organization has been working closely with the Office of Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Management (ODPEM) and other agencies to ensure that the needs of those most affected are met.

During and immediately after the passage of the storm, Jamaica Red Cross volunteers provided over 400 meals to persons in shelters and are currently conducting damage assessments and relief distribution.

Following on the heels of Hurricane Gustav - Tropical storm Hanna threatens the Caribbean

Just days after Hurricane Gustav caused mass destruction in the Caribbean, another storm Hanna is making its way through the region.

Hanna which was downgraded earlier in the day from a Category 1 hurricane had top wind speeds of 70 miles per hour (mph), according to the National Hurricane Centre. It eventually picked up some speed as it moved the northwest and is expected to pick up speed.

Hurricane Gustav makes its way through the Caribbean

While the Haitian Red Cross is busy providing relief to those that were affected by Hurricane Gustav, the Jamaican and Cayman Islands Red Cross is busy preparing to deal with Gustav's onslaught.

On Thursday, Gustav churned towards Jamaica and the Cayman Islands with winds near hurricane force. Gustav moved away from the island of Hispaniola, where reports say it claimed the lives of 23 people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Forecasters predicted it would hug Jamaica's southern shore before making a near direct hit on Grand Cayman.

Cayman Islands: CIRC disaster teams activated to deal with flooding caused by 'Dolly'

The Cayman Islands Red Cross overseas branch has activated its Community Disaster Response Team (CDRT) to deal with flooding caused by Hurricane Dolly.

The system became a named storm while over the Caymans. It was updated to a hurricane after leaving Cayman waters.

Heavy rains and strong gusts were experienced and due to the flatness of Grand Cayman, there was immediate concern about flooding in the densely populated area. Areas with poor drainage accumulated more than three feet of flood water.

Belize Red Cross responds to Tropical Storm Arthur

Tropical Storm Arthur, the first storm of the 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season pounded several districts of Belize over the weekend causing severe flash flooding and some unconfirmed deaths.

According to reports, there are many stranded individuals calling for help to evacuate. At least one bridge and part of a highway to the south of Belize have been washed away. Several other major bridges are under water including one between Belize City and Belmopan. There is also flooding in several northern areas in Belize City.

New 'Dean' reconstruction project in Jamaica

The Hurricane Dean reconstruction effort in Jamaica has received a bolster from the European Commission and the French Red Cross with the implementation of a new reconstruction project to benefit 110 families affected by Hurricane Dean.

The project is being implemented by the Jamaica Red Cross with funding and technical support provided by the European Commission (ECHO), the French Red Cross and the General Council of Guadeloupe.

The project will concentrate its interventions in Clarendon, St Elizabeth and St Catherine, three of the parishes which were most affected by the Hurricane.

The Red Cross brings relief to families affected by floods in Haiti

Tropical Storm Noel pounded the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Bahamas and the northern coast of Cuba with high winds and torrential rains causing severe floods and mudslides since the final weeks of October.

In Haiti, the storm has left 66 persons dead, 16 missing and 55 injured leaving a total of 12,393 families affected by the deadly storm. In addition, a total of 14,109 people are in shelters and approximately 13,000 houses were damaged.

Bahamas Red Cross starts relief efforts after Noel

The Bahamas Red Cross (BRC) is working along with the government and other agencies to provide ongoing relief to those affected by flooding caused by tropical storm Noel.

Marina Glinton, Director General of the Bahamas Red Cross said the storm dropped 10 inches of rain on several islands on October 30 causing massive flooding.

"On Long Island, the water was five feet deep in the homes of the residents with 10,000 persons affected. On Exuma, 3,000 persons have been affected and on Cat Island another 3,000 persons are affected."

Tropical Storm Noel: Appeal revised to assist people in the Bahamas and Cuba as well

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has nearly doubled its preliminary emergency appeal, launched on 1 November, to assist people affected by Tropical Storm Noel, which pounded the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Bahamas and the northern coast of Cuba with high winds and torrential rains since the end of October.
