Violence Escalates in Congo; American Refugee Committee Responds

Minneapolis, MN (November 27, 2012)—The crisis in the Congo worsened this week in the wake of rebel advances in the eastern part of the country. Families have been forced from their homes and are fleeing for safety in Rwanda, Uganda, and other parts of Congo. They join the more than 400,000 other Congolese men, women, and children who have fled their homes this year alone.

The American Refugee Committee is responding to the crisis.

Minneapolis, MN (August 2, 2010) - The American Refugee Committee is assisting survivors of the floods in Pakistan, which have killed more than 1,100 people and forced more than 2.5 million people from their homes.

Health teams traveled by boat to visit medical centers in Swat, which had been made inaccessible by washed out roads and collapsed bridges. The team is also distributing critical supplies and medicines.

Haiti Earthquake: Supplies and shelter at Terraine D'Acra

Four plane loads of emergency medical and shelter supplies arrived yesterday and today in Port-au-Prince. This morning, we started distributing FEMA-grade tarps at Terraine D'Acra settlement and will continue until all 5,000 people there have shelter.

Terraine D'Acra is an area of the Delmas district of Port-au-Prince. We have been working closely with local leaders to coordinate our response.

We also opened a health clinic at the settlement today. Our medical team will be using medicines and supplies from our shipment to care for people in desperate need.

Haiti Earthquake: Medical team hits the ground running

The American Refugee Committee medical team began arriving in Haiti over the weekend. They immediately got to work, helping care for over 150 patients at a makeshift field hospital. It is being run out of an orphanage called Love the Child in Fond Parisien, near the Dominican Republic border.

The doctor in charge of patient care had been working 24/7 since the earthquake. Our doctors were able to relieve him so he could get some much-needed rest.

Emergency Response in Haiti

The American Refugee Committee's emergency response team is on the ground in Haiti, bringing relief to some of the millions who were devastated by last week's earthquake. We've flown in experts from all over the world in health, sanitation, water, protection, security, and logistics. They are working around the clock to reach as many people as possible, as quickly and effectively as possible.
