Tuesday, April 17, 2012 — The American Red Cross has an eye on wildfire threats in various areas of the country. In addition, help is needed in the Midwest where people were affected by last weekend’s tornadoes and in Texas, where floodwaters might swell.

In the Midwest, the Red Cross continues to operate shelters, serve meals and distribute relief supplies. Residents can come to the shelters to stay overnight, eat a hot meal, take a shower or simply receive emotional support as they plan their next steps.

Picking Up Pieces after Midwest Tornado Outbreak

In Oklahoma alone, the Red Cross estimates that more than 600 homes were affected by this weekend’s tornadoes, including 87 homes that were destroyed and 49 sustaining major damage. Another area hit hard is Thurman, Iowa, where FEMA reports 75 percent of the town sustained damage.

Red Cross disaster teams are operating shelters, providing meals and distributing relief supplies throughout the affected communities. The Red Cross is also moving additional relief supplies into the tornado-stricken areas, including comfort kits, tarps, coolers, rakes and other cleanup supplies.

Friday, March 09, 2012 — As she stands in the porch of her temporary house, Masako Horoiwa holds her dog Meru tightly. The poor terrier is shivering with cold, but that is perhaps only part of the reason for her tight grip.

“The dog was the only possession I managed to save when the tsunami came,” said the 72-year-old.

It was a lucky escape, but at the same time, traumatic. “When I realized the tsunami was coming, I knocked on three of my neighbors’ doors. One of them came out and was able to escape. But the other two didn’t respond.”

Japan is an earthquake-prone country that was well prepared for disaster, with tsunami early warning systems and community disaster drills in place before the earthquake and tsunami struck. This foresight and investment in preparedness did, in fact, save hundreds of thousands of lives. However, the massive wave’s impact was greater than anything previously imagined, killing an estimated 19,000 people. Hundreds of thousands were left homeless and lives were changed forever.

The American Red Cross is providing relief across multiple states after dozens of tornadoes swept through the South and Midwest on Friday.

On Sunday evening, Red Cross shelters were open in Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio for those hit by the tornadoes, and Red Cross emergency vehicles are now distributing meals in affected communities. In states that were hit earlier last week, the Red Cross is distributing relief and cleanup supplies.

In the case of the March earthquake and tsunami, the Japanese Red Cross dispatched medical teams and set up its operations center within 5 hours. With an expertise in building and operating medical facilities and a network of 92 Red Cross hospitals throughout the country, the Red Cross was able to receive patients and launch mobile health teams almost immediately.

WASHINGTON, Friday, January 06, 2012 — The American Red Cross has committed an additional $3.6 million to underwrite operating expenses at Hospital Bernard Mevs Project Medishare Critical Care Trauma and Rehabilitation Program in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This increases the total funding of the hospital to $8.6 million since the earthquake struck. The funding will support services until December 2012.

Measles – Rubella campaigns will reduce child mortality, birth defects

DHAKA, Bangladesh, 17 November 2011 - Today the Measles Initiative applauds the GAVI Alliance board decision to fund rubella campaigns in the countries with the greatest need. The decision will result in the introduction of a combined Measles and Rubella (MR) vaccine in many more countries. This will save lives, protect hundreds of thousands of children against birth defects and help to eliminate measles and rubella from the world.
